“Most children and teens spend 75 percent of their waking lives with their eyes fixed on a screen, according to a recent study performed by the International Center for Media & the Public Agenda” (Hampton 1). There are many ways teens get distracted by technology. They can often get distracted during academic time. Also, they can become addicted to technology, which can have many consequences. Distraction from technology can also occur when working on at home assignments. Technology sidetracks teens from their academic time and enjoying their lives. Cheating and missing class time can easily occur when technology is distracting. Often times when students engage in cheating, they do so by using a mobile device to use the camera setting to take pictures of their notes or the test answers. According to Matthew Lynch: “Today's students use smartphones, tablets or even in-class computers to aid their cheating endeavors and leave no trace of their crimes” (Lynch 1). They become attached to their cell phones, not wanting to let go. Teens experience separation anxiety to points where they can’t leave their phones in their backpacks and try to send a text in their pockets. “Social media is no longer just a social activity, and using technology is no longer just a way to pass time. It is a way of life, and problems surrounding it are making their way into society” (Hampton 1). Another way This attachment to one’s cell phone is evident in the hallways at many schools. Students engage less in face to face interactions because they're too busy staring at their phones. “The presence of social media has, in some respects, turned us into anti-social beings. Instead of meeting up with friends and seeing them face-to-face, we now spend a lot of time communicating online” (“Are we addicted to technology?” 1).
