Before the use of advanced technology, many tasks, deemed simple today, were much more time consuming and challenging. As the advancement in technology grew, it has allowed us to use tools that make our lives less complicated. For example, before technology was incorporated into the application and hiring processes of many companies, tedious hours were spent on searching for job opportunities, completing applications, and participating in the hiring phase. I believe that newly acquired technology has given us the ability to quickly and easily find jobs in our field as well as jobs we are interested in. Not that long ago, applying for a job included the steps of visiting the company to request an application, filling the application out, and returning the completed application. The job hunt in the digital age is much more beneficial for society. Today with the use of technology, the amount of time that I can complete multiple different applications is significantly lower than completing a single application without the use of technology. This relates to the in-class discussion of synchronous versus asynchronous ideas about job application processes. Examples of synchronous processes include traveling to a company to apply for a job and a position listing in the newspaper. On the contrary, an example of asynchronous processes is using websites such as Monster and CareerBuilider at home at any time. This asynchronous application process gives you the ability to take your time on answering questions. As these two websites were popular when searching for jobs a few years ago, technology has now advanced to mobile job search apps. Mobile applications such as LinkedIn mobile, Indeed, Monster, and TweetMyJobs allow people to apply for jobs anywhere. Technology has not only given us the ability to job search anywhere at anytime, but it also now makes sending in an application easier than ever. Using the provided resources on a computer or phone can assist us with finding jobs that are most suitable for our interests. With the support from career-centered websites, we have resources that help us to prepare for an interview, to review our resume, and to match us with jobs that are in the area. Although, some people may not be so thrilled that HR and recruiters view social media to get a feel of the potential employee, technology overall benefits the company by using social media within the recruiting process. Companies want to invest in workers that have the ability and skill to help the company reach its goals. Technology is key to finding these workers. When a company’s HR worker views a potential employee’s profile on a social media site, they are looking for any clues as to the extent of the worker’s values. For example, a potential employee who posts include drugs and excessive amounts of alcohol will mostly like not be given the job because these values are not ones that a business will not want in their workers. There are precautions needed to take on social media to avoid sharing inappropriate information on the Internet.
