In the 80s, technology began its rise amongst society: the first cell phone was introduced to the market, personal computers were being sold, televisions were showing up in homes across the nation, and portable music devices were becoming popular. As time progressed, people have allowed technology to become more prevalent in their lives. Even though electronics have benefited our lives, they also have negative effects on us as well. Technology’s role in our daily life should be reduced because it causes a decline in our reading skills, causes excessive dependency, and weakens social relationships with others. In the past, when there was not anything to do around the house, kids would go outside to play. Now, if kids become bored, they would simply start dashing towards the nearest device. According to Charles Simic, “As soon as college students are out of class, cell phones, and iPods materialize in their hands” (374). He goes on to say, “Television…in homes of many Americans is on twenty-four hours a day” (374). I believe that I have succumbed to the dependency towards electronics because my cell phone and my television have become a necessity in my life. This is why reducing of technology in our daily lives would be beneficial, because we may be able to get pieces of our lives back. For example, Simic stated, “The building was so noisy… one could hear several radios tuned to different stations at the same time” (375&376). When the hurricane hit him, he was thankful because he got a chance to be reunited with boredom (376). I think that if people were to lose their cellphones, computers, and televisions for a day, they may actually find something that was hidden by the dependency of electronics. In an interview with Conan, Louis C.K. states that he quit the internet and while he was doing so he actually found the feeling of discovery again.
