Suspense isa state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. Authors use many techniques in their writing to help build suspense. Authors do this to keep their readers interested in their writing because without suspense, reader would get bored and want to throw the book aside. One place where this can be found in Edgar Allan Poe's “The Tell-Tale Heart quote when the narrator is spying on the old man at night. Each night the narrator slowly opens the door until the light shines on the old man's face then on the night when the narrator is about to go into the old man's room the only way to go up and start over there. This kind of suspense will keep the readers on the edge of their seats waiting to see what will happen next A second example also from “The Tell Tale Heart” is at the very end of the story where the narrator is going crazy by the sound of his heart beating until he finally confesses to the police that he had killed the old man. The beating of the narrator's heart made the Story have more suspense because it made the reader wonder if he was going to confess or not. This is also a very very good method that an author would use to build suspense.

The main suspense begins with Helen Stoner telling her story to Sherlock Holmes. Helen told Holmes about the mysterious and strange events that occurred.
