In Taming of the Shrew, by William Shakespeare, Petruchio took on the challenge of winning over Kate by taking complete control over her. He not only controlled her way of living, but also her mental and emotional capabilities. For example, Petruchio was able to have Kate laugh and speak at his command. Not only that, but he was also able to control her voice at any given moment. Nowadays people are not able to have this much authority over another, except in certain situations. The reason this absurd method worked on Katherine was because she was raised up in a society where women did not have much say in numerous matters. However, if this method were to have taken place today, it would not have worked because of the change in society.

The previous quote is similar to this one seeing that it also demonstrates the ability to break down a person’s mental toughness by hurting them physically. Many would say that this method is completely barbaric and should not be performed, but according to Shakespeare and society back then, this would be considered a comedy since it was natural for a man to overpower a woman. They have the ability to do so many great things without having limitations put on them, due to the fact that they are …show more content…

As stated in the quote, Katherine eventually needed to agree to whatever Petruchio thought was correct, due to her growing frustration in his behavior and her inability to fight back against his authority. This particular scene between Petruchio and Katherine, highlights the point where Petruchio has finally won over her voice and can now trick her say anything he wants her to say. Controlling someone else’s voice is not an easy task to complete because the person being controlled would have to sacrifice the one thing in their life that cannot be taken away from them, in order to live in peace and have food on their table, similar to what Katherine had gone through. If someone were to have controlled another person’s voice today, then he or she would not have succeeded, due the fact that they would give up easily. The reason they would give up easily is because they would eventually get tired of the other person’s refusal to give in. We live in a world where people today have a need to fight for what is right and what they believe in. In Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare made most of the characters based on how society was back then; which is why they would be considered “fragile” compared to our modern
