Social Cognition is the study of how an individual can process social, store and apply information about other people and social situations. Its focus is the role that cognitive processes play in one’s social interactions. There are many different aspects of Social Cognition that can be observed in the film Take the Lead. Impression Formation is the formation of an overall impression of someone’s character and abilities based on their traits and behaviours observed. Non-verbal communication refers to the impression formed based on one’s visible cues. Verbal communication refers to the impression formed based on what is said by an individual. There are three types of social comparison, these being; upward, downward and lateral. Upward refers to someone comparing themselves to someone who they deem better than them to make themselves appear to improve their own performance. Downward refers to someone comparing themselves to someone who they deem to be worse than them to make themselves appear to be better. Lateral refers to someone comparing themselves to someone they believe to be similar to them to evaluate themselves. Caitlin demonstrates upward social comparison when referring to all the other dancers that are taught by Pierre as “beautiful swans” and her as the “ugly duckling”. Morgan shows downward social comparison when looking down on all the students in Pierre’s detention class as if they are below her. Lateral social comparison is expressed by Caitlin when she joins Pierre’s detention class because she thinks that its more of her standard and she will fit in better. The Bidirectional relationship between attitude and behaviour refers to how attitudes impact behaviour but behaviour can also impact attitudes. An example of Rock’s attitude influencing his behaviour was his negative approach and feelings towards learning ballroom dancing, which results in him sitting down and not participating in detention. Direct attitude formation refers to the attitudes we form through personal experience. Indirect attitude formation refers to the attitudes we form through viewing something through a film or book. Learning attitude formation refers to the attitudes we form from previously being punished or rewarded. Rock and LaRhette formed negative impressions on each other after they both were directly exposed to losses in their families after a high school altercation. Pierre was indirectly exposed Rock’s life and the obstacles he faces through talking with him after he bails him out of the Police station. Through the learning function Rock learns that a life of violence and crime will not be beneficial for him if he continues to hang out with his brother’s friends, so he decides to discontinue their relationship and foil their illegal
