How are children taught in public school systems? In recent years, there has been much tension about how to successfully prepare children for the future, regardless of their school system. In public schools, this decision is especially troublesome because other people get to decide what is important for students to learn and care about. In public schooling, at least, individualized learning should be focused on to prepare for success. Different interests will need to be taught in different ways. Focusing on individuality, rather than group learning, when it comes to future generations will provide the best preparation for life.

Different students have different needs and different responsibilities, so why are schedules so similar? Why are absence limits the same? In “School is Bad for Children”, John Holt presents “abolishing compulsory school attendance.” The supporting reason is that a compulsory attendance is simply unnecessary. It was meant for the days where education could be denied to a child-- which is no more. A child expected to be at school “six classes a day, five days a week, nine months a year, for twelve years” (Source A) is going to need more than only ten days off, to function at their full potential. This is why the school day schedule (Source B) is outrageous. Those six classes a day, or in my case eight, would transfer into eight hours of sitting in a classroom a day. Many children are not capable of handling that, which is why a school day should be based off of the individual.
