AP English Literature 2016 Summer Assignment The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a dystopian novel where women lose their rights in a totalitarian society to what used to be the United States of America. Meaning that the characters in the novel have no independence and woman have no rights to have an education and are denied to any jobs. Offred, one of the main characters and narrator, is separated from her family and selected as a Handmaid for reproductive purposes.
