Left Bleeding on the Sidewalk Sometimes a family member or a close friend can be put into a situation where they get injured or almost die. In the sidewalk bleeding Andy is Being forced to have the thought of death. When that thought was never supposed to be in the mind that night. Andy ends up on the sidewalk stabbed. Hoping someone comes and saves him, but everyone denies him. Evan Hunter uses symbols in The sidewalk bleeding to convey the theme of murder can sometimes be prevented by strangers willing to lend a helping hand. The rain used in the beginning of the story symbolizes sadness. The drunk man thought Andy was drunk laying in the alley. But Andy was really stabbed. "The boy laying in the rain bleeding. He was 16 years old," (1). The rain symbolizes sadness, and it is sad when the drunk man is too drunk to help Andy. If he had not been wearing the jacket, he would not been stabbed. "The knife had not hated Andy. The knife hated only the purple jacket,” (9). The knife symbolizes murder, if Andy was not wearing the jacket he would of not gotten stabbed. After being on the sidewalk for so long Andy begins too take off his jacket. Andy beings to take off his jacket because he finally realizes that he wants to be just Andy not apart of "THE ROYLAS". "The cop picked up the jacket and turned it over in his hands, the cop said, he's a royal hun?” (10). The cop judged Andy by the purple silk jacket. But if Andy was not wearing the purple silk jacket the cop would of had to do more work investigating why Andy was stabbed. The only reason why the cop didn't have to investigate because all of the answers were on the purple jacket. Since everybody was denying Andy because of the Royals jacket he felt sad because he was alone and nobody was there to help
