When Prince Prospero realizes half of the population was taken out by the Red Death he gathers “a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court” and isolates them within one of his abbeys (Poe). He does this so the fatal plague does not harm him or any of the people he cares about.
