1.1 INTRODUCTION TO PENANG PORT
1.1.1 BACKGROUND
Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. (Penang Port) is situated in Penang. In order to further improve the operational efficiency of the port and to further enhance its service offerings, Penang Port was corporatized in 1994 and has been operating under Ministry of Finance as a government linked-company. In January 2014, Penang Port has been privatized under Seaport Terminal Sdn. Bhd. Currently Penang Port is being in the same group with Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Johor Port Terminal. The Port operates 24hour a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
The target market for Penang Port is shippers in Malaysia northern states and southern provinces of Thailand. The port acts as a main entrance to Malaysia, and is the longest established port in Malaysia. The port is situated along the straits of Malacca which is known to be one of the hectic shipping routes in the world which allowing it to receive many services handling.

To educate the employees, the company has done several approaches. For example by conducting an emergency fire training program and through environmental, health and safety newsletter called as EHSAN. Through EHSAN, employees were given information and safety guidelines. The purpose is to educate the employees to do better in their job. One of the main issues happened towards Penang Port is congestion. The congestion occurred at North Butterworth Container Terminal (NCBT). There was a delay in getting vessels into berth. Vessels came late to ship cargo out from NCBT container yard resulting in space constraints. Most of customers are planning to switch to use Port Klang. The reason why congestion occurs was due to increase in container traffic at NBCT, the window for cargo delivery for export was shortened to one and a half day instead of five
