EXTERNAL ANALYSIS General Environment Demographic Segment Biodiesel is mainly used as a transportation fuel and as such, their main target demographic would be local individuals over the age of 18 that drive. Moreover, biodiesel is used by larger forms of transportation such as trucks, buses and tractors. With these vehicles generally being work vehicles, it is fair to assume that the target demographic is also working class people whose jobs require them to spend a long time on the road. Political/Legal Segment Many government policies can make a large impact on SeQuential’s business. Primarily, a federal program called The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) required a minimum volume of renewable fuel to be sold along with other types of transportation fuel (EPA, 2017). As a result, this policy created a large demand for biofuel and is responsible for being one of SeQuential’s primary sources of revenue. Tax credits were also provided to the biofuel industry in hopes of encouraging the production of biofuel. The policy detailed that biofuel manufacturers …show more content…

Recently, a new form of renewable fuel called renewable diesel was developed and is starting to grow in popularity. It is a direct substitute for other transportation fuels such as petroleum diesel and biodiesel with the latter being the primary product of SeQuential. Renewable diesel is produced using renewable materials such as cooking oil much like biodiesel, however the similarities end there. Renewable diesel is able to withstand freezing temperatures which biodiesel cannot and can also burn cleaner than biodiesel due to it being hydrogenated (Ernst, 2016). Not only that, renewable fuel can also be used in used directly without needing to be blended with petroleum diesel like biodiesel (Ernst, 2016). These advantages over biodiesel means SeQuential faces a very real threat of substitution as renewable diesel becomes more
