Abstract

Sweatshops generally have a negative view amongst businesses and citizens in Western society. A sweatshop is a business establishment that forces its employees to work under harsh and often unsafe conditions and pays only minimal wages. This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of companies using sweatshops to produce clothing. I will also discuss my opinion of sweatshops and the role they play on society and economics. As a disadvantage, dangerous working conditions may place unsafe risks to a sweatshop worker’s health. As vocalized by Harford (2016), “cotton fibres floating in textile factories can lead to breathing and lung problems.” The salaries in sweatshop factories are well below what is acceptable in America. Their conditions are not idyllic, considered to be a grueling industry in a rural countryside (Kashani 2016). The treatment of the sweatshop employee, like they are a piece in a machine, to be exchanged frequently by a hasty turnover rate, may seem cruel. Yet, the constant coming and going of workers from these factories guarantee that a job will always be available, no matter how questionable the conditions, can be found in times when employment is most critical (Kashani 2016). Workers should be entitled to increased wages, normal working conditions, and be given worker rights. They should not have to work as much and be assured of their safety. Numerous people want to dismantle sweatshops altogether, but I think that countries will return to their deprived state without them due to the nonexistence of jobs. I think a solution is to somehow stop big companies from being so dependent on sweatshops, possibly by boycotting. I do agree that sweatshops are a big problem and something should be done to stop the horrible conditions.
