During the 19th century the horror genre made its most evolution. Horror stories were the most common during this time. These horror stories are so intriguing because they are filled with suspense. “Suspense is the uncertainty or anxiety you feel about what will happen next,” ( D’Aco 90). The stories/tales are filled with suspense which keeps the reader hooked on. The way suspension work is by: assumptions, withholding information, and foreshadowing. All these key points add up to create suspense filled stories/tales. First of all, assumptions are made throughout the stories. The pieces of writing make us assume something will occur, but usually change the story up a bit. For instance, “I am forty year old, in perfect health,” ( Harvey 92).
