Susan B. Anthony: Heroine?

Who was Susan Brownell Anthony? More importantly, who was she as a person? What would it be like to be her, nearly 200 years ago, in Northwestern New York? She is normally thought of as a suffragette, or the woman who dared to vote. But that’s not all she did. Susan B. Anthony fought for civil rights, women’s rights, and human rights in general. She was a humble and selfless soul, and a famed suffragette and abolitionist. She is a hero to us as Americans, because she fought for rights we might not have if she had done otherwise. Susan’s interest for helping others began during her Quaker upbringing. “She condemned a proceeding that had ‘trampled under foot every vital principle of our government.’ She had not received justice under ‘forms of law all made by men,’ ‘failing, even, to get a trial by a jury not of my peers.’ Sentenced to pay a fine of $100 and the costs of the prosecution, she swore to ‘never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty’” (Gordon, 7). By these words, she showed the unjustifiable nature of the white male-infested government. As she later famously stated, “It was We The People; Not We, The White Males” (Anthony). She showed that no amount of hate or anti annihilation could bring her brave lionheart down.
In conclusion, Susan B. Anthony was a voice for the people who couldn’t speak for themselves. She was a warrior for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. And to this day, she continues to be an inspiration for young girls across America. She showed us that we shouldn’t be afraid to break unjust rules. Anthony gave us rights we might not otherwise have, and for that, we--man, woman, black, white--should be thankful to Susan Brownell Anthony, a true american
