Survival is being willing to do anything, defying all odds, to make it through a situation no matter how hopeless it seems. An example of survival in our own world today, is the people in the Philippines. Although the people in the Philippines didn’t experience a holocaust, they are still struggling to survive after a super typhoon ripped apart their lives. One of the most intense battles for survival in our history is the Holocaust, where Nazi Germany persecuted the European Jews. Two of the greatest survival stories during the Holocaust are the stories of Anne Frank and Gerda Weissman Klein. Both, Anne Frank and Gerda Weissman Klein’s horrific experiences during the Holocaust exemplify their outstanding courage to try and survive during one of the worst times in history.

Anne Frank and her family lived in Germany during the time following World War I. When the Nazi party came to power in Germany, the Frank’s were forced to flee Germany, and they moved to the Netherlands. Shortly after they moved, the Nazi’s invaded the Netherlands. In order the save their lives, the Franks went into hiding when Anne was at the age of 13. They hid in a “Secret Annex” located in the building where Mr. Frank used to run his business. They had 8 people hiding in a chain of rooms that was smaller than most mobile homes. Because food was being rationed during the war, the Franks, and those that were hiding with them, had to survive on only two ration books. Anne used to pass the time by writing in her diary. It was one of the only ways that she managed to survive and stay sane. She found comfort the words of her diary, and she wanted it to be saved so it could be published after the war. ... face the day knowing that I was the odd one out. That nobody was like me, nor did they understand what I was going through. But, somehow, I found a way to survive this, and came out of it with a new sense of self worth and confidence.

In conclusion, both Anne Frank and Gerda Weissman Klein used an enormous amount of strength and courage to live during the Holocaust. Although Anne didn’t survive, it doesn’t mean that she wasn’t as strong. She faced her final challenge with defiance and determination. Gerda ending up surviving the whole ordeal, and she went on to live a happy life. This just shows that Gerda never left the experiences she had during the Death Marches ruin her life. She took them in stride, and continued on living life. Both of these women have inspirational stories, and their legacies will continue to inspire others for generations to come.
