Do you agree with the values assumptions, practices, benefits, and risks as described for the Emancipatory Communitarian Approach (p. 69)? How would this approach affect your counseling practice? I do agree with the values assumptions, practices, benefits, and risks as described for the Emancipatory Communitarian Approach to a certain extent. I think the bottom line of having a balance of considerations for the community and the client has an overall positive effect. For example, focusing on clients who are unemployed find employment helps the client find meaning and purpose while also being an active contributing member of society. The risk of overlooking an individual’s uniqueness could put a person in a work environment that may not be the best fit, which can cause stress and can also leave the …show more content…

Why or why not? I do agree that with the knowledge we have, psychological professionals can offer a vantage point to public policy and the distribution of work opportunity. If more career counselors were to take a role of advocacy to work towards social justice, it would benefit many individuals and society as a whole. Consider Gottfredson’s concepts of circumscription and compromise (p. 81). Try to recall your early ideas regarding appropriate occupations as a member of your race and gender. When you were a child what occupations were considered to be prestigious by your family? When I was very young I wanted to be a figure skater, and I took lessons too for a time. I think being a girl I was very attracted to how graceful women figure skaters can be and impressed by all the spinning and jumping.
