In the reading of “The Case for Getting Rid of Borders – Completely” Alex Tabarrok he tackles the widely debated issue of borders throughout countries. Tabarrok believes that we should completely get rid of borders and be able to walk through countries freely without any regulation, Tabarrok says that it is a human right to be able to move around wherever we please. Although the idea of having no borders seems like a logical thing to do, it is not at the moment. I believe that there should still be borders put up but to a certain extent, and the reason why is that Mexico and the United States aren’t ready to have open borders. Instead of having completely open borders we should have a system of borders like the ones in Europe. One thing that I do agree with Tabarrok is that having an increase in immigrants due to open borders will provide economic benefit to the country where they reside. …show more content…
It is still being talked about today. People like Tabarrok feel like there should be no borders restraining people from where they are able to go since in his eyes having the freedom to walk where ever you want is a basic human necessity. While on the other hand in recent news, there are people like Donald Trump who believe we should have borders that are more secure and keep more people out. As you can see immigration is a very complex subject with many varying views and angles. We are a nation made up of immigrants. My grandfather on my father’s side emigrated from Lebanon. My great grandfather on my mother’s side emigrated from Lithuania. They came here in pursuit of the American Dream. They were proud to follow the rules of the nation and I am so glad they came to this country. However the world has changed since those days and is a much more dangerous place. Restricted and controlled immigration can only be good for the country’s national security, the American worker and the U.S. economy. In his address to a joint session of Congress on January 8, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson declared freedom of the seas in times of peace and war. Looking back, it seems ridiculous to think that anyone could challenge the right of individuals to navigate the oceans freely. However, fast-forward to the twenty-first century and we can see an analogous debate over the issue of immigration rights, with territorial borders being the main topic of discussion. The system of immigration in the United States is complex and oftentimes restrictive, and while revisions to the system usually include increasing quotas or other solutions to let in certain groups of people who deserve special consideration (such as those whose skills are needed in a particular field), they are still very limited solutions. The obvious question that arises from letting in some people but not others is that of fairness. Is the accident of birth or luck of being in the right place at the right time enough to justify restrictive citizenship to a select few? I would argue not. I intend to argue that a commitment to human rights entails the position that borders ought to be open in order to guarantee other human rights, especially the right to migrate.

The United States of America would not be where it is today if it wasn’t for the immigrants who founded this country and those who worked hard to make their American Dream come true. It would be ideal if things were simple enough so we could open our doors and let new generations of immigrants come and do the same for the future generations. Unfortunately, today there are many factors that were not present in the past that makes an open door policy out of the question to insure the stability of this country at the very least.
Considering the ideas that both authors have brought to the table, I have concluded that in order to make progress in solving the problem of undocumented immigrants, we as a country must decide what’s best for our country. We either look at undocumented immigrants as an asset or a parasite. America is the ‘land of opportunity’ where millions of people want to live there and pursue the ‘American Dream’. We should not let people stop from achieving their dreams. But on the other hand, a quantity of immigrants leave their country because it does not have “stable democracies and free markets” that “ensure economic growth, rising standards of living and thus, lots of jobs”, because the countries of these immigrants “birth rates and native populations fall”.
Patricia Nelson Limerick describes the frontier as being a place of where racial tension predominately exists. In her essay, “The Frontier as a Place of Ethnic and Religion Conflict,” Limerick says that the frontier wasn’t the place where everyone got to escape from their problems from previous locations before; instead she suggested that it was the place in which we all met. The frontier gave many the opportunities to find a better life from all over the world. But because this chance for a new life attracted millions of people from different countries across the seas, the United States experienced an influx of immigrants. Since the east was already preoccupied by settlers, the west was available to new settlement and that was where many people went. Once in the western frontier, it was no longer just about blacks and whites. Racial tension rose and many different races and ethnic groups soon experienced discrimination and violence based on their race, and beliefs instead of a since of freedom at the western frontier.
