Literal and figurative borders can restrict and control many aspects within the lives of people all over the world. All people should be able to make the decision of where they wish to settle, start a family, and eventually die as a happy and fulfilled human being. The idea of travelling or living in a different country other than where you were conceived and brought up is a dream many people aspire to in era, but all wander-lusting souls should have the opportunity to make that dream a reality and find happiness and a new home in an unfamiliar city or country. Throughout the entire novel, King emphasizes the attributes of the physical setting over everything else. The geographical location of Truth and Bright Water forms a border that many aboriginal residents find hard to overcome, including Tecumseh’s mother Helen. Helen is a romantic dreamer who would love to travel the world but never really has the financial means to do so. Truth and Bright Water both reside in remote prairie regions, so in order to travel to any of the ‘big cities’ is a struggle for the inhabitants. She was “thinking of leaving Bright Water and moving to Toronto or Vancouver” (151), but when Elvin heard “he got concerned”(151) and bought her a car, the Karmann Ghia, to please her. The Karmann Ghia is a symbol that has two different meanings; to Elvin the car is an anchor trying to hold back Helen, whereas Helen perceives a chance to break away. The sports car is given as a present for Helen in hopes she will stay happy in Truth and Bright Water if she has the ability to drive herself around. Elvin expects the car to hold back her wish to leave him and Bright Water by giving her hope she will one day, when the car is fixed up, have freedom. The Karmann Ghia to Helen is a ticking clock counting down to when she receives independence. The car also emphasizes the lazy habits of Elvin because of his procrastination. Generally, a sports car connotes a fast and steady speed, which is ironic because of Elvin’s slow pace in repairing it. This symbol is significant because it highlights the restrictive border of geographical location that holds aboriginal residents in Truth and Bright Water. I was able to relate to when Jessie said that borders are symbols of the divisions we make of each other. These borders are made up by people to keep each other apart from one another. Whether it is for social, economic, or cultural reasons, the division remains. As Brooke pointed out, these borders prevent freedoms and deny opportunities.
In the beginning of the story the presence of water symbolizes the physical and mental freedom the young couple share. The story begins with Jamie driving on the way home, to the lake house, after a long day of work. In the car Jamie yearns “ to be unchained in the weightlessness of the water” (203). The physical act of being weightless symbolizes her mental weightlessness or freedom. Jamie and Matt make love in water which enforces the connection they have with themselves and the mental and physical freedom they feel.
Overall, the use dual narration in this novel is very effective as it conveys the thoughts of both narrators. Furthermore, altering chapters also acquire momentum for the text, as well as foreshadow the events of McBride's life through that of his mother, plus suggest the similarities between them. Subsequently, by highlighting similarities between two stories due to the different narration, the novel, The Color of Water achieves complexity and nuance. While the parallelism of several issues and the rhetorical strategies further contribute to the meaning of the novel’s message, when Ruth and James finally came to terms with their past and when Ruth was able to help James understand his origin.
The author then looks back upon the time in his life when her mother decided to drive Hunter Jordan’s old car. However, she didn’t know how to drive, and was generally afraid to get behind the wheel. On that day, she drove crazily on the road, and declared to never drive again. James McBride also reflected on his life up to a teenager, who knew that bad things would occur in the not too distant future if he didn’t change his ways and behavior.
There are several theories to look into when discussing the morality of borders. I specifically look into Stephen Macedo’s chapter “The Moral Dilemma of U.S. Immigration Policy, open borders versus social justice?” in Debating Immigration and Joseph Carens article “Aliens and Citizens: The Case for Open Borders.” Using political theory back up his argument, Carens uses Rawlsian, the Nozickean, and the utilitarian to support and explain his claims that there is little justification for keeping oppressed people from other countries seeking a better life out of the United States. Macedo also uses similar liberal philosophy referencing Rawlsianism to support the opposing idea of a more restrictionist society, posing the question of cosmopolitanism
When it comes to immigration, many things come to mind. There are many things that an immigrant faces when he/she decides to migrate to another country. For instance, for an immigrant moving is not an easy thing to do, they will have to leave everything behind and start over again in a whole different country than their own native country. At first it is going to be hard because they do not know anyone, they do not speak the language. Parents will have to look for a house and also look for a job to support their family and learn how to survive in what seems like a different world.
Personally I completely agree no border should make people feel like they can’t go some place to live a good life. No border should separate families and break relationships. But if you get a negative response from the welcoming place you either leave that place or stay there and move around with in that country. It’s necessary for every person in this world to treat another person as the same way he will treat his family and it’s the right of the every person in this world to fight for his rights no matter what happens. That person have to face the difficulties of that place where did he move out and get his head up to face the racist people around him.
We all move around the world and chose to be stay where we want to be. For instance, when someone moves to Africa, India or other part of this country in development, they do not worried about being legal. Of course they will need a Visa to be able to be there and once the set food they 're about having a Social Security like it mandatory in the United States. However when is the opposite, those people have to worried about being legal. Meaning having a Social Security, for example.

Sethe left Sweet Home pregnant with Denver, "and ran off with no one's help" (p.224). She ran scared and fearful of the trackers following her trail. Sethe met Amy Denver, a white woman, on her way to Ohio. Amy helped Sethe find the Ohio River. The river was "one mile of dark water.[and] it looked like home to her and the baby"(p.83). When Amy left, Sethe traveled downstream and met Stamp Paid. He helped her and Denver cross the river to freedom.&nbs away the memories of Sweet Home and began her life with Denver at 124. Water represents the transition of Sethe's slave life to her life of freedom. Again, water has cleansed the soul of the sin of slavery. The river is now a barrier. It separates Sethe's life of slavery, to her new life of freedom. Water introduces the end of Sethe's life without Beloved and the transformation of Beloved from a spirit to a physical being. Beloved emerged from the river fully clothed and nineteen years old. Beloved's emergence from the river symbolizes her new life in the world. She was no longer trapped in 124; she was human once again. Beloved had "new skin, lineless and smooth, including the knuckles of her hands" (p.50). She was new and unused.

If the “truth” does not follow these guidelines then it cannot be “true.” Obviously in contrary anything that goes against the boundaries of “truth” is inevitably false. True and false, in many cases does not seem to be a simple black and white situation, there could sometimes be no grounds to decide what is true and what is false. All truths are a matter of opinion. Truth is relative to culture, historical era, language, and society. All the truths that we know are subjective truths (i.e. mind-dependent truths) and there is nothing more to truth than what we are willing to assert as true (Hammerton, Matthew). A thing to me can be true while for the other person it may not be true. So it depends from person to person and here the role of perception comes into play. As truth is a vital part of our knowledge, the distinctions between what is true and what is false, shape and form the way we think and should therefore be considered of utmost importance. We often face this situation in real life through our learning curves and our pursuit of knowledge to distinguish between what is true and what is false.
