In this week’s class, the group presentation was about the LGBTQ population. The presenters discussed the Minority Stress model, which describes the high levels of stress that members of these minority groups have to face. There are many causes for this, including low socioeconomic status, family rejection, poor social support, discrimination, and many more. The members of this population also suffer from microaggressions, which can be verbal, behavioral, or environmental, and they can be intentional or unintentional. These members can receive microaggressions at school, on the street, and even within the family. During the group presentation, the presenters showed a video to help the class understand what members of this population get through.
This study explores the lives of sexual minority individuals who have endured childhood physical abuse, and the long term psychological effects in which it creates. This study in particular sampled members who were solely apart of the LGBT community - 112 adult lesbians and 115 gay men to be exact. Childhood physical abuse is well-known to be detrimental as it is closely related to psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Even worse, it is known to arise high risk behaviors such as suicide thoughts, and substance abuse. Furthermore, it is crucial to understand internalized homophobia and experiential avoidance as it too plays a huge role in the current psychological well being of theses individuals. Internalized homophobia, negative societal attitudes towards homosexuality, is known to bridge the gap for gay men and their current symptoms. HIV/AIDS is a major risk factor affecting a large portion of the LGBT community, especially gay men. CDC.gov (2013) found that gay and bisexual men of all races continue to be at high risk for developing HIV. The purpose of this paper is to define stress and how it effects the body's physiological systems. This paper will include the normal functions and organs involved in the following five physiological systems, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, immune and musculoskeletal. This paper will also include a description of a chronic illness associated with each physiological system and how the illness is affected by stress.
It is very reasonable to conclude that research on depression of those who identify as gay, lesbian or transsexual is not accurate; there is an underreporting of people who identify as these sexual orientations because of the fear of being different. It is understood that those apart of the LGBTQ community actively hide their identity in hopes to avoid being rejected or abused (Bird, 2013). Once the reporting issue of having a smaller percentage of the actual representation of the LGBTQ population is put aside, there is evidence that highly suggests that lesbians and gay men are at higher risk for psychiatric disorders than heterosexuals (Cochran, 2001). Even after underreporting, there is still enough information to conclude that sexual discrimination can have harmful effects on the quality of life. This video was about making a clearer and more interesting introduction. It was effective as the woman talked about the different levels of an introduction and how it should be presented. The diagrams and examples were very useful.
There is no lack of visual aids in this video. The entire video is filled with graphs and animation. The use of graphs alone may not have kept the audience as involved. Each graph is presented and is seemingly linked to next through smooth animations. The graphs are presented in a array of colors. However, the colors aren’t to busy as this may strew viewers away from watching all six minutes. The unique pairing of graphs and animation creates a smooth transition from topic to topic. This allows for the audience to follow the meaning of the video. All graphs are explained through the voice-over and a key is also presented. This allowed for the information to broadcasted to the audience clearly and meaningfully. The simplistic way in which this is done is of great value to understanding of the topic to the audience.

This unit delta with the struggles that gay man faced trying to live in a society where they were seen as less then men. We discussed the self-hatred they felt because of the way they felt abut themselves. Wanting to be someone they were not just to be accepted. We also looked at African American community and how they treated African American men who were gay. How African American gays were put in a spot where their loyalties were tested, they had to chose if they were gay or black, they had to deal with discrimination from their own race and from the gay community. We also dealt with the idea that being a gay man meant not being masculine. That being gay somehow took away from how much a man one is.
The first student was Nathan, who struggled with phonemic awareness. I was interesting in seeing Nathan’s problems rhyming and how that was how his disability was diagnosed. His disabily was only seen in his written language and did not influence his communication skills. I thought that it was interested in hearing that a student’s avoidance of something that’s hard can be commonly mistaken for attentional issues. While I was watching the video I came up with ideas that I thought that the special education teacher should do with Nathan. Some of my ideas were for Nathan to work on
Because America views gender in only two categories, people who upset the binary are subject to mass discrimination by members of the general public, causing them to lose their homes, jobs, or life savings. For example, in a study of Northeastern business students, 34 percent gave a hostile response when approached with a situation regarding a transgender employee. Each student was given the same scenario where a female employee was uncomfortable sharing the bathroom with a male-to-female transitioning co-worker. Of the 194 students, only 27 percent gave an inclusive response, making all restrooms gender neutral (Rudin 726). The study exemplifies how transgender individuals are misunderstood and discriminated against in the workforce and even in the broader society. It is shown that transgender people are more mentally secure when they exist in a society that accepts their identity. Stress is the combination of psychological, physiological, and behavioral reactions that people have in response to events that threaten or challenge them. Stress can be good or bad. Sometimes, stress is helpful, providing people with the extra energy or alertness they need. Stress could give a runner the edge he or she needs to persevere in a marathon, for example. This good kind of stress is called eustress. Unfortunately, stress is often not helpful and can even be harmful when not managed effectively. Stress could make a salesperson buckle under the pressure while trying to make a sales pitch at an important business meeting, for example. Moreover, stress can increase the risk of developing health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and anxiety disorders. This bad kind of stress is called distress, the kind of stress that people usually are referring to when they use the word stress.
