In “Still Clinging to Truth” writer Carol Iannone published on November 16, 2016; he starts off the paper strong stating something President Obama had said about people about people who live in the Rust Belt. He then goes into stating the claims of the article about the First and Second Amendments, and in what way these issues have arisen and become more predominant in American culture today. He gives facts about in what manner Christians have been targeted by people and the Government and been called hate-full and bigots for their beliefs. Christian leaders have often written about homosexuality in a negative manner. Throughout the majority of Christian history most theologians and dominations have viewed homosexual behavior as sinful and immoral especially in African-American churches. Certain orthodox interpretations of Christian morality have led the overwhelming majority of African-Americans who attend church to consider homosexuality a sin and thus same-sex marriages as wrong. Black liberation theology, especially in the context of the black political church, has led a minority of African-Americans to be inclusive of homosexuals and to permit their churches to serve as a political resource for those receptive to lesbian and gay rights (Shaw). However, in the past century some African-American Christian religious groups and churches have espoused a wide variety of beliefs and practices towards homosexuals, including the establishment of some 'open and accepting' congregations that actively support queer members. The Abyssinian Baptist church is one of these institutions. By comparing the preaching’s of early 20th century pastor Adam Clayton Powell Jr, to present day pastor Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III, there is strong evidence to show the evolution of churches position on homosexuality in the Abyssinian Baptist Church.
The four cultural events analyzed in this section are: Christians justification for racism and slavery, the history of women in the Bible and in the religious community, the treatment of Jews by religious peoples, and the general negative opinion of homosexualy amount Bible readers. Gomes explains that in these four events, people did use, or are using, the Bible to justify their hatred of different groups. He also brings up the fact that Christians and other religious people have since apologized for their treatment of women, African Americans, and Jews. By saying this he heavily implies his belief that, once again, Christians are going to be on the wrong side of the debate in regard to homosexuality. The section on homosexuality is the most relevant in this part as it is a current event that is still debate nationwide.
Just Checking by Emily Colas is a self-reflective, anecdotal compilation of short stories and memories with each story assigned a heading or title that often foretold whether the following explanation would be funny or profound. I was drawn to the book not only out of interest in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and how it affects a patient’s way of living, but also because in doing initial research into the book, there was an editorial review from Dave Sedaris who happens to be one of my favorite authors and who possesses a sense of humor that is both witty and often inappropriate. Dave Sedaris commented that Just Checking was terribly funny and selfishly and hoped that the author, Emily Colas, would suffer a relapse. With that critique, I chose this book. I found the book to be a quick read, but it wasn’t quite as humorous as I expected. Nevertheless, this was a difficult topic to discuss from any perspective. Colas covered her obsessions and sufferings with a heavy dose of sarcasm and wit, taking advantage of the many opportunities she had to poke fun at herself.

Amy Bloom’s collection of short stories in her book “A blind man can see how much I love you” is a clear depiction of love and loss, of suffering and of endurance, and of struggles and survivals. One of her stories “Hold Tight” gives the readers insight in to the effects and influences of a the sickness of a mother on her daughter. The terminal illness may bring her death, but that may also bring about suffering of implacable nature in others that surround and comfort her. It is asserted that the vitality of the “mother's painting, "Lot's Wife", in Amy Bloom's "Hold Tight" can be compared to the meaning associated with Anna Ahkmatova's poem "Lot's Wife" in the sense that both women find importance in the destroyed city of Sodom, the physical pain of dying, and the story of Lot's wife herself. The destroyed city of Sodom is significant to both Amy Bloom and Anna Ahkmatova because it symbolizes the destroyed lives of the mother and of Lot's wife. In "Hold Tight" the portion of the mother's painting that is the destroyed city of Sodom is described by Amy Bloom as "bright and grim, were the sticky little flames of the destroyed city, nothing, not even rubble, around it." This is symbolic of the Mother's destroyed life because she was dying and her husband and daughter were becoming more dysfunctional the closer to dying she became. Bloom writes "more often than not, we'd end up back in the brown fog of his study, me taking a last few puffs with my legs thrown over his big leather armchair, my father sipping his bourbon and staring out at the backyard." This book is a study of the personal tales of many single mothers, with intentions to understand why single mothers from poor urban neighborhoods are increasingly having children out of wedlock at a young age and without promise of marrying their fathers. The authors chose to research their study in Philadelphia’s eight most devastated neighborhoods, where oppression and danger are high and substantial job opportunities are rare. They provide an excellent education against the myth that poor young urban women are having children due to a lack of education on birth control or because they intend to work the welfare system. Instead, having children is their best and perhaps only means of obtaining the purpose, validation and companionship that is otherwise difficult to find in the areas in which they live. For many of them, their child is the biggest promise they have to a better future. They also believe that though their life may not have been what they want, they want their child to have more and better opportunities and make it their life’s work to provide that.

The topic that Keith Boykin brings up is the issue that the Black community, black ministers and churches specifically, do not support same sex marriages. He addresses the hypocrisy he sees in this, as the black community was once the group fighting for equality. According to Boykin, blacks don’t support gay marriage rights for two reasons. Blacks only see images and representations from the gay white community, so they don’t feel like it involves them. There is not many people in the black community that are openly gay in their churches, so the community is lacking a face of their own to tie the issue to. They also don’t support same sex marriages because they have been offended by gay white activists trying to correlate and compare the struggle blacks had during segregation to the present day gay rights struggle.
The United States is a spiritually and culturally different nation, may be the most religiously different state in the world. It seems hard for any of the people in the United States to see that persecuting church-driven state could ever increase its horrible head again. Earlier to the ratification of the bill of rights, various states, like Massachusetts were still pursuing those who had other faiths. Therefore, leading those who faced discrimination escape to Rhode Island. In 1791, the first ten amendments were ratified, which were named the Bill of Rights (Karen O’Connor & Larry J. Sabato 2006).

Anna Quindlen also made a good point,” No religion should be forced to marry anyone in violation of its tenants (gay marriage), although ironically it is only religious ceremonies that gay people can marry, performed by a clergy who find the blessing of two who love each other no sin”… The purpose of Quindlens article is to persuade the reader that gay marriage should be acceptable to today’s society and Gay couples should receive the same benefits when they are married as straight married couples. In her article Quindlen establishes her appeals to logos and pathos but needs to establish a more credible ethos.
Andrew Sullivan, an editor of the New Republic, and William Bennett, editor of The Book of Virtues, have widely contrasting viewpoints about same-sex marriages in their articles Let Gays Marry and Leave Marriage Alone. Sullivan believes in “no special rights, but simple equality” (pg. 25) for the gay community. Bennett, on the other hand, believes that same-sex marriages “would shatter the conventional definition of marriage” (pg. 29). They do, however, share some common writing styles in these two contrasting articles. These two articles were posted in Newsweek on the same issue, and on contrasting pages.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the fourteenth amendment, equal protection under the law, and prohibited state bans on same-sex marriage in the United States, in which according to dissenters of same-sex marriage, will reduce their right to religious freedoms. Hodges has brought an increase of intensity to this conflict between the first, and fourteenth amendments, reiterating there is no solution for the turmoil between the first and fourteenth amendments when the Supreme Court opinions wavers. Therefore Christianity became the stone in the way of gay rights. His actions demonstrate he is very determined to stop immorality in the US. Many American are in his support but equally on his against too. The publics are divided on this matter. The Churches also do not allow immortality. Therefore people respond Christianity as a denomination who does not include gay as a human.

This country has many law and know the country has come up with new laws these laws have affected many. One main issue that out there is gay marriage in the Christian church. This is not just affecting the churches but the whole Christian community. In the past all the way since the olden time the Christian community has always had to argue with the gay community about them getting married in the church. Of course, in those times there was nothing to enforce it till now; as we see nowadays, times have changed from having the constitution made to have the first ever African American president. Which is where the problem start, the first ever African American president who would of know he would have been the person to put out there the law
