In the article “Prestige Panic” by Robert Samuelson is about parents pushing their children to apply and attend a prestigious school. According to Samuelson, parents force their children to get good grades in high school and get a high score in their ACT or SAT. This means that if children get high scores they would be able to enter a prestigious school. Parent expectations are also a factor in educational success, which is tangentially linked to post-high school success. According to Goodman and Gregg (2010), even if parents have high expectations for their children, they are not guaranteed to succeed in higher education. Expectations are not enough to determine whether students move on to higher education. When expectations are linked to parental involvement, attainment of higher education is improved.
What this means is that if someone as a parent has gone to college they are more probable to be involved in with the education and effort that their children have. For example a college graduate parent is more probable to read to their chi9ld than a parent that only graduated from college. The impact that this has a children is that it helps them have a better understanding than other children.
As the college take these factors into encounter it helps the disadvantaged students go to college. It can help the disadvantaged because their grades and test scores are lower because they come from a minority group where their parent’s income is low, which they chose a home in a neighborhood that they can afford. This can lead to having their children to go to a school that has less funding, therefore they would lack in preparation and end up having low grades and low standardization test scores.
Later in his article, Cohen explains how this leaves middle-class families in a very uncomfortable situation. In this documentary, many of the individuals were “born rich,” meaning that they have inherited an excessive amount of money, not because of their intelligence and talent, but because they are heirs to wealth. The director of the film, Jamie Johnson highlights the life of the rich, in which the wealthy 1% have more than the rest of the 99% of people. Meritocracy is non-existent in the life of the rich. A rich person has many educational benefits, because they have the networks and connections that those of the middle and lower classes do not have. The rich have the right access to schools because of their wealth and power that comes from their wealthy status. For example, in the documentary one of the rich kids, Luke Weil, attended Brown University and was describing his entry to the Ivy League as expected. He did well on the boards, but it was “incidental” (Weil, movie) because without it he would have still went to Brown University or any other Ivy League University because of his inherited wealth. Interestingly, even when he attended Brown University, he was not a good student, where in his first year he did not attend more than eight academic events, including tests and exams. Krugman believes that the only way to get into a good school is to be living in a higher economic area. Krugman 's even go about saying that this is why there is such a huge economic gap between social class. According to Krugman “Instead the rise in debt mainly reflected increased spending on housing, largely driven by the competition to get into good school districts. Middle- class Americans have been caught up in a rat race, not because they’re greedy or foolish but because they’re trying to give their children a chance in an increasingly unequal society”(564-565). All in all Krugman is saying that the only way for children in this day in age to receive a good education is by either being from an upper class family or making the public believe that your upper class, even though you can not afford that lifestyle. Just think there is always scholarships and programs available for people who are very dedicated to school and their career that can maybe help aid them financially. For example one of my friends that I know who isn 't from the wealthiest family still managed to make it into a good school because he was a good student and was willing to go above and beyond. Before World War II, attending college was a privilege, usually reserved for the upper class, but, in today’s society scholarships, grants, and loans are available to the average student which has made pursuing a college education a social norm. Norms are usually good, they help keep society run in an organized manner by sharing common rules and values. But, when pursuing a college education becomes a norm, it does more destruction than good. For a lot of students, a major reason for attending college is because their parents tell them it’s the thing to do to become successful in life.
