A Farwell to Arms take place in the middle of World War I, in Italy and Switzerland. The two main characters are Lieutenant Frederic Henry an American ambulance driver in the Italian Army, and Catherine Barkley an English Nurse’s aide. Lieutenant Henry comes home from his leave and finds the most beautiful girl Catherine Barkley. When Henry first meets Ms. Barkley his intension are clear he was only there for pleasure nothing more, but he keeps coming back. Things between Henry and Ms. Barkley escalate quickly. Ms. Barkley and Henry’s feelings for each other are confusing at first like there just playing a game. Eventually they confess their love for each other. Everything goes fine between the two until duties call and Henry has to go back to the war. Ms. Barkley is very upset, because her fiancé died in the war. She does not want the same thing to happen to Henry. Henry goes off to war and wound’s his knee on the battlefield. He is taken to a hospital in Milan. He asks the nurse that is already there if there are any more nurses coming hoping she know if Ms. Barkley was there or coming. His leave was revoked. During this time Ms. Barkley tells Henry she is pregnant. Henry returns to the front and leads his team to the retreat. Henry and his team takes secondary roads thinking it would be faster. The ambulances break down and the travel on foot. They run into battle police that execute commanding officers on sight. The police grab Henry but he breaks away. Henry jumps in to a lake and swims a safe way away from the front and battle police; Henry is now a criminal running away from police. She was startled by rain in her nightmares. She perceived rain as death. At first Henry wanted to seduce the nurse, to him it was a game, he had told the nurse that he loved her, but she had caught on to his game. Catherine confronted Henry and told him what she thought of his game. He was severely wounded on one of his runs. Henry was sent to the American hospital where Catherine worked. That is where he actually began to fall in love with her. He fully recovered and returned to the war-front, during a retreat the Italians started to fall apart. Henry shot an engineer sergeant under his command for dereliction, later in the confusion Henry is arrested by the battle police for the crime of not being Italian. He is disgusted with the army and facing death at the hands of the battle police during questioning. Henry decided he has had enough of the war, he ran into the river to escape. After swimming to safety, Henry boards a train to reunite with his love Catherine whom is pregnant with his child. Here is where he meets with an Italian bartender who will help him escape to Switzerland by boat. Henry and Catherine plan to get married soon after the baby is born.
