A news report found out that many High Schools use old football helmets for their football teams - some as old as 10 years. Each helmet has an 10 year old warranty and should get reconditioned & recertified every year. It doesn’t mean that a 10 year old helmet isn’t up to code. It just means you can’t use it because you can’t get it recertified. Helmets that were recertified have lables inside them showing the last recertification date. Let’s face it. Football will always be dangerous. Some claim that the American sport is far too dangerous and the risk of concussions and injuries far outway the pros of the physical sport, while others insist that technological improvements and new regulations have made the sport safer. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history and education at New York University, argues in his paper, “We Must Stop Risking the Health of Young Football Players,” that football is a sport that is too dangerous for the youth. He states his belief that technological improvements in helmets and changes in the rules of the sport have had little effect on reducing injuries and that nothing has worked.
Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. For the safety of the players in the present and future, a stricter concussion protocol should be required at all levels of football. Though improvements have been made, the game of football is constantly changing and the protocol needs to keep up with the changes. According to Forthofer (21012), when football was a new sport in the 1860s to 1896, helmets were not used. The first helmets that were used were made of mole skin or leather and were very uncomfortable and hot (Forthofer, 2012). In situations where the player gets injured due to faulty equipment gear, the NFL league should be held fully responsible.

From personal experience of viewing football at the high school level, whenever there has been a collision so strong that has caused the player’s helmet to fall off from impact I have never seen the athlete or coach to instruct them off of the field to check the helmet for its fit or evaluate the player for a concussion. Felder says in his article How College Football’s New Helmet Rule is Hurting the Game for All that the new rule is hurting football because instead of getting to the root of the problem coaches and trainers will automatically turn to tightening the helmet than figuring out how the player’s helmet should be changed in order for it to stay on., Felder says, “When that helmet is too tight, you're compromising its ability to distribute impact and for the interior to move with the head as it is designed.” While Felder has a valid point that the rule will be causing more issues than helping figure out the root of the problem, the NCAA and NFL will need to enforce and follow through with the precautionary measures of following up with the athletes when their helmets come off.
