Do Political Parties Aid or Hurt Our Political System?
In public elections at the local, state, and national levels, candidates are identified by the political party to which they are affiliated. Voters rally behind the candidate that belongs to the party that they agree with the most. The party that has control over most elected positions holds the power to make decisions. People's opinions have begun to be defined by the names Republican and Democrat, but are these political parties aiding or hurting our political system?
On the side of hurt, there are rarely individuals who agree with every stance that the party they belong to takes on controversial topics. When elections come around, instead of researching the stance the candidate takes on individual issues, voters can tend to under-research a candidate because of their affiliated political party. Does the political party system lead voters to more easily vote misinformed?
Aside from those worries, supporters of political parties make the point that these institutions take stances on social issues and provide a base of voters to vote for candidates that represent the party well. The origins of political parties give insight into how they have become deeply rooted into our society. The history of controversial stances taken by each party mentioned in Flander's second point gives specifics on what each stand for and is helpful in seeing where the two main political parties disagree. A majority of Flander's third point about the inner workings of political parties was new to me and although it isn't closely related to whether political parties aid or hurt our political system, it's interesting to learn about how these parties function.
