Hi everyone, I think that the interview with Kelly was interesting in that she mentioned decriminalization of sex trafficking that I think she made good arguments for. When I first thought about the bodies of the workers, I never thought of the possible empowerment that they may feel being able to reduce negative stigmas through legislation and being able to do what they want with their bodies but receiving protection for assault and trust in the police. I think that this interview was a good balance of perspectives of what needs to be done about helping workers who are voluntarily or voluntarily part of sex trade working and that the common tie between them is that they need resources to help with their socio-economic well being. Kelly’s article has raised valid points regarding safety to the prostitute within a brothel, but there is so much evidence that proves the ill effects of this experiment in other countries that the evidence cannot be ignored. Although, parts of the sex trade industry may initially see positive results for some of the workers, the majority would end up worse off than before. Due to the illegal nature of this industry and the control exuded by the pimp, the physical and psychological risk to the prostitute, the highly addictive nature of sex, and the organized crime behind the scenes orchestrating and controlling ever aspect of the industry, it is clear that decriminalizing prostitution would result in significant negative affects on society, prostitutes and those with sexual addictions.
Patty Kelly was an assistant professor of anthropology at Washington State University and she had just completed a study of the place of commercial sex in the modern world when she wrote the essay “Enough Already, It’s Time We Decriminalize Prostitution”. The title itself gives the reader a clear direction in which the author wants to sway the reader. While the essay was written as a response to a political scandal involving New York Senator Elliot Spitzer, Kelly sparks discussion on why prostitution should be legalized. The author backs her stance by providing the result of research that she herself has conducted, along with research conducted by the government of Sweden. Trafficking Victims Protection Act clearly defines the terms, communities have struggled in how to address those victims in relation to immunity. According to Dysart (2014), those with the perspective that children who are prostituted are delinquent will inadvertently re-victimize, which is not congruent with federal and state laws that have been put into place to offer protections. This mindset proves to be a barrier to the rehabilitation and progression of child victims. Due to the negative thought processes, the Attorney General has sought distribution to personnel best methods and practices in addressing victims of minor sex trafficking that is directly connected to grants for assistance in strengthening progressive programs (Dysart, 2014).
Globalization can be defined as the “development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free-trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labor markets that transcend nation-state boundaries”. As the world becomes a more integrated society we are more readily able to share goods, services, ideas, and technology. Furthermore, we are able to move more freely between nations. With this freedom there comes prosperity for people, companies and entire countries as we can now gain access to things we never had before. But as we expand our ideas and make it easier to cross borders, those with malicious and deceptive intentions are slipping through and committing heinous crimes that all too often go unnoticed.

She hopes that the readers are moved to act against this huge issue that is taking over the life of innocent children. As I stated already, Smith may assume that the best way to make people aware about this problem or to educate them is by sharing real life stories of children who were victims of sex trafficking. However, I’m certain that there is people out there that will believe that these victims choose to live “the life.” nevertheless, there will always be people who will do nothing to make a change and stop sex trafficking, it can almost believe that these people are cowards and are afraid to deal with reality. She shows the jobs young girls do in the factories, “They spin… they weave… They stamp” By showing a list of work the young girls do, Kelley appeals to her audience’s emotional sense in order to deliver message of dissolving child labor. She also uses rhetorical questions followed by solutions in order to question what must be done and how to do it. She states, “what can we do to free our consciousness?... we can enlist the workingmen… to free the children”. By doing this, Kelley forcefully suggests that her audience consciousness are enslaved with the idea of child labor. She states her and her audience must solve the problem with unity to enlist the workingmen on the jobs. This gets back to to Kelley’s purpose of destroying child labor. By offering
Like I stated earlier my brother goes out into the dangerous streets in Alaska to help women who are trapped in sex trafficking. Finding out what really happens and that my brother could get killed trying to help these women makes sex trafficking very personal for me. The text talks about how girls start to trust a pimp and then he takes advantage of them. Once they’re in the pimp’s care they are hard to help and get out. I wake up every day wondering if my brother is safe. It hit me hard when the article talked about troubled girls who go in search of love and find the pimp’s. I’ve been in a situation where I was searching for love and was very vulnerable to anyone who came along. I can understand how easily it is to trust someone who is telling you what you want to
Currently, an advocate for sex trafficking she started with posting her story on the internet to share awareness. She explains and validates discussed topics during the course of the show. She claims that pimps gain trust the easiest by “boyfriending in”. She was wined, dined, and bought for until she was forced to repay his “kindness” by prostituting. When her pimp was not happy with her, he beat her viciously and withheld preconceived privileges from her.
Most interviews require strategic planning and relevant questions to be able to gather enough information. There were many things that the detective did great for example, in the first scene when the victim and the detective walked in, he immediately asked her to sit in a comfortable chair, got her a cup of coffee and asked her if she needed anything else. He quickly proceeded to explain what the interview is going to be about, removing any doubt or apprehension that she may experience during the interview. The detective began the interview with," Don't try to remember things you can't…if you need to stop anytime, just tell me." (Victim Interview,1998). Which essentially created a rapport between the detective and the victim. The detective began the interview with an open-ended question, asking the victim to tell him what happened from the start. While the victim was talking, he did not interrupt, but was rather patient with her, nodding and making eye contact continuously. During a one point of the video, the woman began crying, unable to hide her distress, to which the investigator reacted quickly responding "No pressure, I know you are upset... Are you alright to carry on?" (Victim Interview, 1998). In my opinion, this is a great technique to use when one is dealing with an elderly victim in distress. As the investigator carefully listened, he then recapped all the information back to the victim making sure it is correct. We see this throughout the whole film, where the detective continuously seeks victim's validation. Another thing that I found interesting is the way that the investigator used the cognitive approach on the victim, to stimulate her memory. He politely asked her to draw a sketch of the area that the crime happened at, then he proceeded to make her retell everything from the beginning but in the present tense. As she was struggling, he patiently guided her, by saying "Show me", "Describe to

Legalizing prostitution would provide sex workers with regulatory protection and allow this form of work to be recognized as legitimate. As the author of “Think Again: Prostitution” states, “evidence shows, that criminalization of sale or purchase (or both) makes sex workers-many of whom come from marginalized social groups like women, minorities, and the poor-more vulnerable to violence and discrimination committed by law enforcement. Also, criminalization can dissuade sex workers from seeking help from authorities if they are raped, trafficked, or otherwise abused.” Therefore, sex workers are subjected to unfair treatment that could be prevented if this work was legalized and safe conditions were enforced. Seeing and listening to the speakers talk about the painful experiences that they’ve been through made my perspective change completely. Before this event, I did not know anyone who has been a victim of sexual violence (unless they haven’t spoken up). I had no idea how common sexual violence was in this world, especially at universities. I also did not know how hard it was for victims to come to terms with their situation and speak about it. I truly believe that this new perspective I now have will change the way I view people, and stop me from being judgmental.
