The articles this week spoke about terrorism and the logic behind it, who it affects, and how to prevent it. The article about the logic of suicide bombing discusses why terror groups choose it and what they have to gain from it. Suicide bombing is difficult to track beforehand and has a heavy civilian cost. It is used because it has been shown to work when receiving concessions from their enemies. The whole point of suicide bombing is to force the hand of your enemy. The people who are affected by suicide bombers and other terror attacks are mostly the urban poor according to “Poverty and Support for Militant Politics”. Terrorism is difficult to anticipate and can turn people against each other faster than anything else. Look at today’s society, terrorism is causing countries to turn their back on refugees and immigrants out of fear of an attack. In one of the articles, it spoke about who terrorism actually impacts. Contrary to popular belief to poor people of a country tend to dislike militant groups more than the middle class. This makes sense because generally where the terrorists chose to attack is in the urban areas where the lowest of income gather to trade and look for jobs. Even though the poor seem to have the most to gain from the militant group's goals, they are actually the ones who carry the brunt of attacks. Understanding this can help military campaigns in the country more effectively fight off the militant groups. Suicide terrorism has risen because it seems to have been proven to work. Hamas used it against Israel when Israel was too slow to remove troops from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It was successful in getting Israel to speed up the process and thus deemed as a success by Hamas. Terrorist groups generally see results when using suicide bombings because it is used against civilians. A nation’s first job is to protect its’ citizens.
