Has consuming poison ever crossed your mind?
You add it to your morning cup of coffee, you bake it into cakes and cookies, you even sprinkle it all over your weet-bix for added ‘flavour’. It also lurks in almost all processed foods, including bread, meat, ketchup, even salad.
But is sugar really that bad for you? Chances are you already know sugar isn’t the healthiest thing out there. Yet you’re probably still overdoing it. The average New Zealander consumes over a kilo of sugar a week, more than double the recommended amount. Which is shocking seeing how damaging sugar is for our health.

We as a generation need to change our modern diets because not only is sugar killing us, but it’s killing the environment too.
The cultivation and processing of more than 145 million tonnes of sugar a year impacts the environment through the loss of natural habitats. Intensive use of water. Heavy use of agro-chemicals, and pollution.
We are a sugar saturated society and our future looks bleak if we don’t start taking care of our bodies now. The human body isn’t made to consume the amount of sugar we currently do. So make it your goal to get through the day without sprinkling sugar over everything, or grabbing that crunchie bar at the checkout. Try substituting juice and fizzy for water and fruit. Think twice before you surrender to that great ‘2 for 1’ deal or ‘good value’ chocolate bar. Get in the habit of reading nutrition labels. And your body will thank you. After one week of cutting down on sugar your risks of heart attacks will decrease by 10% and acne will disappear. The chemical in your body Leptin will increase too. Which allows you to feel full again and now when you’re actually hungry. And you’ll suddenly be able to experience a whole range of flavours that were previously muted by
