Dr. Sutton highlights what it takes to be a good boss. People that work for a good boss are 20 percent less likely to have a heart attack (Sutton, 2010). Dr. Sutton wrote that teams with stronger leaders cost the company less money and achieved their work better (Sutton, 2010). Engagement and performance of employees were based upon their direct boss and not if the company was good or bad (Sutton, 2010). Most bad bosses have employees who have check-out: actively disengaged, and undermine their co-workers accomplishments. Managers have to find the balance between performance and humanity to be successful. Performance is about doing everything possible to help followers do great work; while humanity is about employees experiencing dignity and pride. However, humans are not perfect creatures, we all make mistakes and have character flaws. This is where personal humility comes into place. A level 5 leader admits when they make a mistake or have a problem and by doing so, they are able to fix their problems more effective than a level 4 leader. You may have the most professional drive for success, but if you are unable to recognize what you may not be perfect in, you can not improve. Level 5 leaders do not focus around their own ego and instead focus on the larger goal of building a better company. Level 5 leaders take on the burden of blame when things go awry, while level 4 leader divert the blame to external processes. This is what makes a level 5 leader special. Personally, I do not believe I am a level 5 leader. Currently, I sit at around a level 2 leader, a competent team member. This is because I do not see myself having the ability to manage others in a way that a competent manager is able to do. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.

I agree with Jim Collins when he states that people can develop into level 5 leaders. The main focus of a level 5 leader is not on themselves, but on the company and how they can make it great. People need to find that cause, work, or activity that pulls the level 5 out of them. If you're not doing something that you are passionate about, you can never become a level 5 leader. Level 5 leaders will do whatever it takes to make their company great, and finding that something special you care about will help you in becoming a level 5 leader.

As defined by Pasmore (2009), leadership is a culture (behaviour) which is defined by the collective actions of formal and informal leaders towards achieving the set organizational goals. This implies that leadership is about the leaders themselves and the relationship they share amongst them and their followers.
