Success has been used by may individuals as a way classify achieving a step higher in life then they are currently positioned. This, however, is vague and does not truly resemble the true meaning of the word. Success is much more than a vague indicator. Despite the general meaning of success, every person perceives success differently. Success can be perceived differently by people of different backgrounds, different intelligence, and different desires. If a person were to perceive success, the individual might think of the financial prosperity, good grades on a math test, or a happy, healthy family. In an interview of Taylor Willis, he states, “Academically, I find success in getting the work done and getting ‘C’s on my work.” For some students, such as Willis, success can be found in just accomplishing the bare minimum of their work. However, an individual who is studious finds academic success in a much different way. David Williams states, “Success would be getting through something without struggling.” Individuals, such as Williams, find that accomplishing success without struggling will often result in achieving a high letter grade such as an “A” or a “B.” In doing so these are much different from their peers such as Willis. Ninety percent of Americans state they find success in having a happy, healthy family and being able to achieve personal goals (Angier). The large extent of Americans who state this show the in which success can be something other than having large, fancy, extravagant possessions. Earl Nightingale states, “Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it's at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.” Nightingale explains to make someone happy and successful, the individual would have to do it themselves. This explanation by Nightingale rings ever true in the idea of happiness and success are only accomplishable by the individual wishing to achieve it. Whatever is near and dear to the individual’s heart is what can make them successful, not the lavish items often portrayed in entertainment media watched everyday. These examples are not what make people successful as shown by the overwhelming opinion of the public.
