Should school control student internet access?
What if students internet access wasn't blocked? They could look and search anything. They would not get in trouble for anything they did on school-provided technology. Anything that the school provides the school should be allowed to block anything inappropriate or out of sorts. Unless you bring your own electronic the school has every right to take it and also search it. The school has a right to block or take away anything they provide for the student with the purpose of education, because they legally own it.
Schools should filter what they block grade by grade. “The school board currently uses a central firewall that is used to block any websites that contain adult content , gaming , and inappropriate material. Watson wants the school board to consider progression of the filters grade by grade”.(source 1). The school does have the right to block anything. The age in students should matter the older student should not be held to the same standard as younger students.

“Board staff taking steps to make the Internet filters more effective .These include a review of search engines, tighter restrictions on apps , greater promotion of digital citizenship”..(source 1) The board needs to have more effective filters. Also they should take more ways to filter everything grade by grade, because blocking everything the same for everyone some times blocks the sources they need at a higher level , or they cannot access most of where their assignments are for class.. “ The board acknowledges that filters don't always catch everything right away due to everything, changing internet where there is constant flux between rules , criteria, hardware, software, and apps “says the report”. (source 1) People should know that filters don't catch everything that is searched. Filters catch some things but never everything that is
While students have First Amendment rights, there are still some things that the school is allowed to control. Censorship in school is important because it can minimize distractions and other behavioral problems. It also gives parents peace of mind and students the feeling of security. It is also important for a student to be able to express themselves. People express themselves in different ways, and they have the constitutional right to do so whether they’re on school grounds or not. Censorship is a very controversial issue and should not be taken lightly. There are many things to consider when censoring, and it’s important to have balance between censorship and freedom in schools.
Grabber- We are all privileged to live in a free nation, where we can do what we desire. But, what if one day you were told that your school can monitor your every action on the interweb and can punish you for your online activities on and off campus? Well, certainly many students would protest without hesitating, for that they would no longer have privacy.
There are over 2,405,518,376 internet users on a global scale. More than 50% of the world has a form of Internet censorship, and of those countries China, North Korea, Iran, and Vietnam heavily restrict its citizens. This recent topic has reached new heights in the US with the growing number of internet access. More and more people are debating whether the internet should be censored. Internet censorship is the control or suppression of what can be accessed, published, or viewed on the internet.
Schools should not be able to restrict or regulate what students say online for the following reasons. Students have the right to express themselves because of the freedom of speech stated in the first amendment , restricting what students can say online won't stop bullying, and majority of the students and teachers are not affected by cyberbullying at all.
Yes, I do know that even with school searches people bring all types of things on to school campus no matter if they get caught or not. I feel as if the students do have the right to refuse if they are searched or not because the fact of them being a minor and the fact that as a kid we get into places where we don't always know the right answer or way to go so we agree to things we might not understand. I also feel that if law enforcement has to have probable cause the school bored should have probable cause as well. " school officials.... are not required to advise students that they have a right to refuse consent to search .... or rise discipline." (Ellenberger 32) Some schools have all different policy's and rules to telling students their rights to refusing anything because they are dealing with more minors then with legal adults. Secondly, many parents get concerned about their children being in schools that don't have searches. " Parents and students fear that they will be in class with other students who are under the influence." (Robison) The parents and students feel that having school searches will help eliminate the drug and alcohol use in or during school hours. Lastly, most school bored are just looking for a safe environment for their students and staff to come to for eight
Which include danger to the school or any of the students and this should be the only way teachers and schools can restrict students’ rights. but schools tend to go too far restricting students’ rights “The principal had ordered the stories removed from the paper because he believed the story about teen pregnancy was inappropriate for some of the younger students at the school, based on its discussion of sexual activity and birth control”(What are the free expression rights of students in public schools under the First Amendment?) a student though that this was appropriate for the school to read and it was but the officials at the school did not think the same way. also another case Bazaar v. Fortune officials tried to stop publication of a book just because it had a few words in it that they did not like.(The First Amendment and Public Schools) this is taking there restrictions just too far. The government should be able to set guidelines of what the immediate danger is and what kind of expression goes way too far and have it sent out to all the schools in the United States. This might help schools from restricting our

To start off, when the schools that use technology in their classrooms they gather data on the students’ academic progress this may include students’ tests scores, over-all grade and the students’ attendance records and when share it with other school districts it may violate the students’ 4th amendment rights. The 4th amendment was made to protect or to enforce the people right to privacy, by giving the people (in this case the students) the right to be safe in their person, home, papers and
The internet is a wonderful learning tool. Of course, like any good thing, the Internet comes with its ups and downs. There are several things that aren’t suitable for any child on the internet, such as pornography, violent material, adult chat rooms, and racist or hateful sites, there are even websites about cheating in schools.
The proposed internet filter is not only a flawed concept, but an expensive one. If implemented, it will do little to nothing to prevent online crime. The cost of the filter far outweighs any benefit and the potential for abuse in the future is frightening. Viruses will still exist, phishing scams will continue, illegal downloading of movies will still exist and paedophiles will still get their child porn.
Technologies like computers or iPads (or anything with internet access for that matter) in the classroom could possibly distract students from their work. Classroom administrators seem to forget that the majority of students really don’t want to be in the classroom.. I remember when I was in highschool, whenever a teacher would bring students into a computer lab, or bring class sets of computers, or bring iPads into the classroom for a lesson a large portion would go onto twitter, or onto any unblocked flash game website whenever the teacher was not looking, try to access anything for them to “escape” the classroom. When there are a large majority of children and/or teens that do not want to go to school, and are given tools to be rebellious so easily, what is going to stop them? Aside, who really wants to sit through the same autonomous paper typing over and over again...
The Internet is an extremely educational and communicative tool. Everyone can access a tremendous amount of information and connect with people on the other end of the planet; it is capable of doing everything. Nowadays, the society is facing a variety of challenges and controversies which are mostly related to religion, morality, the economic crisis, etc., and the most talked-about issue in today’s world is “Internet censorship”. Although the Internet is very useful, many people are suggesting the idea of censoring the Internet; however, the government should not censor the Internet because a free and open Internet usage has many positive impacts on people’s lives.
Ever since incidents such as 9/11 and Columbine, high schools have started implementing new rules regarding cellphones. Cellphones attract the attention of building managers, teachers, parents, and students. Although teachers see them as a distraction and a way to cheat, they can be quite helpful to students. School districts should permit students to use cellular devices in school for purposes of improving their education and providing themselves with a sense of security. By permitting the use of cellphones in school, students can increase their knowledge and complete school work by using applications and other features on their smartphones.
Everything revolves around the internet these days. Every business, big or small has a internet website for you to visit. Let’s face it, the internet is not going away, we as a people must learn to use this tool and not think of it as a negative thing. The internet must be used positively to benefit us. We can find anything we want through the internet. The internet can be abused but we must educate our children so they can use it effectively to their advantage. We definitely need to make most schools have the internet in classrooms, there is no doubt about it.
