Straight Talker and Judge My book is “Adaptation” by Malinda Lo. It is a science fiction about a high school girl named Reese and her debate team partner, David who live in San Francisco, have experienced a rare phenomenon in the sky that would change the world. There are flocks of birds fly into airplanes and cause thousands of people die in the airplanes crash. On their way back to San Francisco after hearing the news in Arizona, there is a bird flies into their headlights and the car flips over. They are in critical injury. When they wake up in a mysterious hospital in the middle of nowhere, the doctor would not tell them anything except telling them that they have received a special treatment, which cures Reese and David back to healthy really fast. Everything become strange when Reese returns home, she finds out that her house is bugged with listening devices, the government tries to hide the truth of the rare phenomenon, and she falls in love with a beautiful girl, Amber Gray. Reese and David would find out the conspiracy that the government tries to hide, but also cause them in trouble. When Reese and David are in Arizona after the debate, they see the news on planes crash by flocks of birds, they decide to drive back to San Francisco with their debate team coach. On their way back, their coach get shot in the gas station and their car flip over by a bird flying into the headlights. They have received an advance treatment that can cure them from critical injury. Everything is weird that happened to them. I would stop Reese and David from driving back to home. They don’t even know what might happen outside with such a weird phenomenon. If they listen to their coach and stay in the airport, then their coach ... ... middle of paper ... ...image on how birds are killed, how birds lay on the ground with losing wings and limp, and how people react when they see black and dark stuff on the ground and can not recognize those are birds because there are too many of them. I feel like I was a part of the story when I read this quote, my heart was beating so fast when I read a part about thousands of birds laying on the ground. I can not imagine if I really see this in real life. Also there is a part where the news announces the airplane crash by a thousand of birds, I quickly have a visual image in my head; birds are flying in the same directions toward to the airplane, they are fast just like the wind. Their bodies are crushed by jet engine. I can see the blood still on the jet engine but the birds plummets to the ground. Those images can help me to understand the story even more and enjoy the story more.
Since the start of this quarter I have been reading the novel Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight and I am currently on 153. This book is about Amelia Barron and her alleged suicide. Right before Amelia jumped from the roof of her private school, she was caught cheating on a test. Amelia’s mother, Kate, is in disbelief that her sweet, perfect, obedient daughter would turn recalcitrant, and in even more disbelief that her daughter would commit suicide. The main characters in the story are Molly Barrow, Patrick, Gabe, Imogen, Tess, and Julia. Molly Barrow is introduced as a girl who is judged on everyone for cheating on her boyfriend, Patrick with his brother, Gabe. She transfers to a new school, but comes back in summer with heartbreak and joy. Patrick is Molly’s ex boyfriend who has hatred to Molly every since she got back from summer and was Molly’s first love. Gabe is Patrick’s brother and who Molly cheated with. The name of my book is Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan. This is a mystery thriller about five teens who plan to kidnap their English teacher to teach him a lesson. Their teacher is very hard on them and does not allow any room for slacking. But instead of just kidnapping him for a while, they decide to abandon him for a while by a deserted lake in the middle of nowhere. Two of the teens come back to find that he is dead. Now they must decide what to do with the body and how to explain his death.

She was always silent in class and afraid to speak in front of people. Many students today might feel the need to fit in with other people so they wouldn’t have to be looked down upon. As we take a look at Melinda’s life we’ll be able to see how she handles her daily conflicts. In the book, Speak, Melinda Sordino, an incoming freshman at Merryweather High, starts her year off with a terrible start. She’s stuck with a mean history teacher, by who she calls Mr. Neck and a whole bunch of other weird teachers like her English teacher of who she calls, Hairwomen, because of her crazy, uncombed hair. Her favorite teacher would seem to be her art teacher, Mr. Freeman, because he seems to be the nicest and most reasonable. Every student, even her ex-best friend, Rachel Bruin, gives her nasty looks and treats her rudely. All this trouble started when Melinda called the cops at an end-of-summer party. Everybody thinks she did that just to bust them and get all the people in trouble but instead, she called the cops for something more terrifying. The book that I’m reading this week is We Are All Made of Molecules by Susin Nielsen. This story is about Stewart, who’s not very social and very smart, and Ashley, who loves fashion and is a bit mean and tries really hard to be popular. They are new step-siblings, but Ashley doesn’t like the idea of a new family addition. This book explores social standards and high school hierarchies. I think that this book has excellent characterization because all of the details and the actions that they take. For example, in the beginning, the book shows that Stewart avoids confrontation with a guy in his gym class, which helps us understand he isn’t great at human interaction, and it shows that he really enjoys science, which demonstrates that he is passionate
Many people in the world are like puppets. They move to the commands of others. Once in awhile, the puppet obtains a will of its own and moves against the crowd. Ivy, from Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, became that one puppet who moved against the crowd, with the crowd being social constructs. A social construct is something that the society makes true even though to other people, it has no value. There are many examples of social conflicts throughout the book and the clans or groups in school are social constructs. The main character, Melinda, struggled to fit into these categories causing her to be the Outcast to society. Nobody seems to want to truly befriend Melinda, causing her to be alone. Piper’s use of imagery in this way gives the opportunity for the reader to experience “first hand” the power of words, and inspires the reader to be free from the fear of writing.
The central theme in “A Jury of Her Peers” is the place of women in society and especially the isolation this results in. We see this through the character, Minnie Foster and her isolation from love, happiness, companionship and from society as a whole. Not only does the story describe this isolation but it allows the reader to feel the impact of this isolation and recognize the tragedy of the situation.
Just like in the beginning exert of “A Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson, the author introduces suspense and invites readers in by first setting the scene of an ideal and perfect world where,”…all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings.” The scene the author is painting shows nature and humans coexisting together and this type of interaction brings an image of beauty and peace to mind. She also mentions that the country was especially famous for its abundant and various types of birds and makes several references to them throughout the story. Different types of birds carry a different symbolism each for example, the dove is a symbol for peace and friendship but a crow can signify that something terribly wrong is near.
I agree with it being an enthralling story. It has influenced many lives, and in many different ways. One way is that it has encouraged people to take up falconry. One good example would be Robert Kennedy Junior. He and a group of falconry friends all have said that her book has contributed to them being falconers today. I myself am considering the sport now.
Upon learning of Armstrong’s motive, Isobel attempts to hang herself. As Isobel lies helpless on the floor, fighting for one last breath, Stephenson illustrates that Isobel’s “heels flutter almost imperceptibly” (92). Later, everyone gathers around Isobel’s dead body much like they did around the fluttering bird in the first experiment. “But this time Isobel, in her coffin, has taken the place of the bird in the air pump”(96). The fact that now a dead Isobel symbolizes the bird implies that this time the experiment has gone dreadfully wrong. The fact that the second experiment fails harbors a much more solemn consequence than if the first had failed. If the bird in the first experiment had died, tears would have been shed only until the purchase of a new bird. Not only does Armstrong sacrifice a human life in the name of science, but he symbolically diminishes all that the bird and Isobel represent. Isobel’s death implies the demise of freedom, will, and humanity.
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
