Steroids have been in sports for the longest time. But the use of them has increased tremendously over time. Many athletes use them to bulk up and get more muscle. In the long run though, using steroid can seriously hurt an athlete. “The use of performance-enhancing drugs is not accidental; it is planned and deliberate with the sole objective of getting an unfair advantage.” (npr.org). This is what Richard Pound said during a debate over the use of steroids in baseball. The use of steroids by professional athletes is becoming more common, so it needs to be put to a halt to protect the wellbeing of athletes.

Steroids have been used by many athletes. They take them because they think that it will improve their playing performance. They also feel that it builds lean muscle mass and reduces fat. Some athletes sometimes take two or more steroids at a time. They believe that taking two different drugs will give them double the strength and muscle mass than just one.

Many professional athletes have ruined their career from using steroid. A few MLB players are Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Roger Clemens. Some of the other athletes are Shawne Merriman a NFL player, Canadian Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson, Floyd Landis an American cyclist, Greek olympians Kostas Kenteris and Ekaterini Thanou, ...

Drugs bring out the flaws in people. The worst decisions can ruin a life. Everyday drug users had the potential to become more. Sports increase the need for faster players allowing more opportunities in the drug world. Usage of steroids is a sickness and not acceptable on or off the field. By cheating your way to the top you crush people who equally worked hard as well. Athletes should be tested to prevent the unfair circumstances many find themselves in. Players should not be permitted to take any illegal drugs that could improve their status on the team.
