As a second year Pathologists’ Assistant student at Indiana University School of Medicine, I am writing to express my interest in the Pathologists’ Assistant position. I believe that this position is ideal for me because my internship at Montefiore was the first step in me become a Pathologists’ Assistant. Through this internship, I was able to obtain the knowledge on how to become a PA, what a PA does, and it solidified any question on whether I wanted to be a PA.
My studies through the IU School of Medicine have allowed me to become qualified for this position. I rotated for a month in the gross room, autopsy, and frozen section. They all taught me how to work with the residents and attendings and the different skills involved in each rotation.
The physician assistant is a team player in the medical world, working daily with surgeons, physicians, therapists, and many other health care professionals. Similar to the job description of physicians, PAs see patients, take medical histories, preform physical exams, make diagnoses, order and interpret tests, and develop treatment plans (Ludwig). A physician assistant, nowadays, may even perform procedures that were once performed exclusively by physicians. Because every PA must have a supervising physician who oversees their work, it is assumed by many that PAs are “assistants to doctors”, however, that is not the case because a vast majority of PAs work independently. The extent of supervision by a physician varies depending on location and branch of medicine. Although, a physician assistant may carry out much of the same roles as a physician would, the amount of schooling required to become a PA is nearly half as many as that of a physician. My primary goal is to become a Surgical Technician/Medical Assistant. I've done tons of research on the career and I feel it best suits my interest, my work ethic and my hunger for the expansion of knowledge. I plan on attending VCU for four years, majoring in Bio-Science. Practicing in the medical field is a respectable profession, since its main goal is to help others when they are in need. My lifetime goal is helping others and I plan to use my career to fulfill it. The classes I’m taking right now and the ones I’m planning to take senior year are classes I believe will influence my decision in my college major/career as well as counting toward my GPA. This will help me get into schools who have medical programs that I’m considering. Also, taking AP classes can help me save money since I can earn college credit. I’m taking all AP classes, and the electives I’m taking have been classes that have helped me consider being in the medical field. I’ve found that over the years, science and math are what I’m doing better in versus history and english. I believe by being in the medical field, I can help others in the best way I can.

I shadowed one PA in internal medicine who had an integral role, sharing the responsibility for care of patients right beside physicians. Another PA who specialized in pediatrics was extremely warm; this was key for interacting with fearful children and nervous parents. I learned so much everyday, from things like medication, dosage, reading lab tests, drawing blood, immunizations, signs and symptoms. I shadowed another PA at the NICU at Kings County Hospital. She worked close with residents and the head physician, and made frequent rounds checking infants who were kept in a sterile, climate controlled
