Assignment 9 Video 1 Vincent Van Gogh was interested in the inner man. He tried to portray that interest in his artwork. He definitely challenged common assumptions, (Percy’s principle #4) of the outside world. This artist was very emotional. He dealt with so much emotion distress because he suffered from mental illness. In his paintings, he says he converted emotions into what he saw. Most of which he said he shows “the power of darkness.” Starry Starry Night, one of Van Gogh most famous paintings, was painted while staying in an asylum. Video 2 Don Mclean’s song or could be a ballad rather, “Vincent” is very emotional. Even if you do not know the story behind the man Vincent, you can tell that there is a sadness and depressed mood there. Mclean must have had some kind of relation to the feeling of Van Gogh when he wrote this song. The sentimental connection that Don had with Vincent was that Don Mclean too was very burdened by something mental or life stressing. He probably had no control in the situation, just as Gogh had no control of his mental illness. Vincent Van Gogh a wonderful artist influenced another musical artist Don Mclean. Although it may be different forms or types of art somehow they influence each other. Just as Gogh influenced McLean to write a number-one UK hit, Mclean influenced song writer Norman Gabriel to write the song Killing Me Softly, one of my favorites. Although Mclean did not take his own life, he understood that one should not feel so bad, or depressed and alone so strongly. Taking your own life should never be an option. The song Vincent is very touching, I feel if someone who is sad by anything life can throw at them, this song can let them know someone understands. Video 3 1. The painting represents great philosophers, thinkers, and mathematicians. All these people lived at different times but the painting brings them together learning from one another 2. The hand gestures of Plato and Aristotle reveals different thoughts. Plato points up because he believes in a higher power, while Aristotle who looks like he says “no, no look here” as he believes in the earthly things. 3. The fact that Raphael painted himself in this painting among these amazing men, shows he must think highly of himself. 4.
