Assignment 9 Video 1 Vincent Van Gogh was interested in the inner man. He tried to portray that interest in his artwork. He definitely challenged common assumptions, (Percy’s principle #4) of the outside world. This artist was very emotional. He dealt with so much emotion distress because he suffered from mental illness. In his paintings, he says he converted emotions into what he saw. Most of which he said he shows “the power of darkness.” Starry Starry Night, one of Van Gogh most famous paintings, was painted while staying in an asylum. The painting is detailed with so many dark colors, the focal point of waved lines running horizontally over the city. This painting is also full of secrets. Video 2 Don Mclean’s song or could be a ballad rather, “Vincent” is very emotional. Even if you do not know the story behind the man Vincent, you can tell that there is a sadness and depressed mood there. Mclean must have had some kind of relation to the feeling of Van Gogh when he wrote this song. The sentimental connection that Don had with Vincent was that Don Mclean too was very burdened by something mental or life stressing. He probably had no control in the situation, just as Gogh had no control of his mental illness. Vincent Van Gogh a wonderful artist influenced another musical artist Don Mclean. Although it may be different forms or types of art somehow they influence each other. Just as Gogh influenced McLean to write a number-one UK hit, Mclean influenced song writer Norman Gabriel to write the song Killing Me Softly, one of my favorites. Although Mclean did not take his own life, he understood that one should not feel so bad, or depressed and alone so strongly. Taking your own life should never be an option. The song Vincent is very touching, I feel if someone who is sad by anything life can throw at them, this song can let them know someone understands. Video 3 1. The painting represents great philosophers, thinkers, and mathematicians. All these people lived at different times but the painting brings them together learning from one another 2. The hand gestures of Plato and Aristotle reveals different thoughts. Plato points up because he believes in a higher power, while Aristotle who looks like he says “no, no look here” as he believes in the earthly things. 3. The fact that Raphael painted himself in this painting among these amazing men, shows he must think highly of himself. 4. The argument of art being founded on geometry is shown with Raphael being on the right-hand side of the fresco. Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.
Coming from a family greatly involved in art dealing, Vincent van Gogh was destined to have a place in the world of art. Van Gogh’s unique techniques and use of color, which clashed and differed greatly from the masters of the art world of his time, would eventually gain him the recognition as one of the founders of modern art. Van Gogh’s early life was heavily influenced by the role of his father who was a pastor and chose to follow in his footsteps. Although he abandoned the desire to become a pastor, van Gogh remained a spiritual being and was strong in faith. Plagued with a troubled mind and poor health, van Gogh’s life became filled with torment and isolation that would influence his career in later life as an artist. In his late twenties, van Gogh had decided that it was God’s divine plan for him to become a painter. His works would express through thoughtful composition and vibrant color, the emotions that he was unable to manifest in the real world. Van Gogh’s perception of reality and his technique would face harsh criticism and never receive full acceptance from his peers as a serious artist during his brief career. In a collection of correspondence entitled The Letters of a Post-Impressionist, Vincent confirmed these thoughts while writing to his brother Theo, “It irritates me to hear people say that I have no "technique." It is just possible that there is no trace of it, because I hold myself aloof from all painters” (27). His technique would later be marveled and revered by the art world. The piece of art work that I have selected is called Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. The lines observed in this picture are implied lines. The colors used in this picture are blue, yellow, grey, a pinch of hazel ,and a brownish black.There was also may water colors used in this picture. The picture shows a variation of swirls and circles. In the background , you can see that there are many wave-like mountains. This makes the picture more eye catching. Overlapping is used in this picture to bring out the different shapes . Such as , the triangles, circles and the crescent like shapes. This picture has many meanings to it. I hope to learn more about it in the future.

Van Gogh’s post-impressionist style is very unique of the late 19th century in France and most of his work was done with impasto technique as a way of expression. It is recognizable that his illness had a larger impact on his paintings’ subject matters than the style they were painted in. Vincent Van Gogh’s fame mostly came after his death, and while his paintings did help him to express himself, they now live on to visually translate the true, unwritten stories of his life and the effects paintings have with a mental illness.

The painting express creative drive that they give form to immaterial ideas and feelings (this is relevant to abstract art). Since the author had mental health issues during the creative process of the painting I believe, he didn’t just used art and beauty themes to express his paintings, he wanted to show the world what he was feeling inside. Although, many people can view this painting’s major theme as Art and Beauty, I also viewed it as Art and Spiritual Belief. The reason why is because according to Sayre, Gogh wrote a letter to his brother by saying: “My paintings are almost a cry of anguish.” Gogh utilized a variety of colors on the spectrum, giving his paintings life. He often used the art style of Impressionists in that his paintings are depicted as he sees fit, and not how they are naturally viewed. In present time, Vincent van Gogh is probably the most widely known and highly appreciated person of postimpressionism. During his brief lifetime, Vincent’s work went almost unknown to this world. His work now hangs in countless museums throughout the world and is considered priceless. His work became an important bridge between the 19th and 20th centuries.
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.

He failed in many different careers, in love, and even his artwork. Van Gogh sold only one painting his entire life. Because of his mental illness, he was considered a crazy person.
The Italian Renaissance and the Baroque era are two major periods in art history, some of the types of art in those periods were painting, sculpting, and architecture. During these periods, many artist gained enormous fame from creating wonderful pieces of work that represented their beliefs and artistic thinking. This essay will analyze and evaluate two pieces from those major art periods. Rembrandt 's painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp and the sculpture David, by Michelangelo. These two masterpieces shed light of their significance in art history. David represents the Italian Renaissance for it being a strong symbol of the new republic, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp depicts the focus on human progression.
Starry Night and View of Toledo are both landscapes featuring a town, a church, and a beautiful night sky. Both artists used the contrast of light and dark to detail their paintings. They both also took liberties in arranging the cities the way they saw fit.

Currently, the painting is housed in the Musee d’Orsay, which is located in Paris, France, Europe. Vincent Van Gogh’s piece of art is a well-crafted masterpiece that captivates his style very well. Accordingly, his use of dense brush strokes, visible hues that reflect off the water and overall perspective that conveys an organic, yet untamed take on nature.
