The Effectiveness of Standardized Patients Experience (SPE) in Improving Therapeutic Communication Skill of Undergraduate Nursing Students DISCUSSION
The Effectiveness of Standardized Patient Experience (SPE)
Statistically there was a significant difference between the mean value of pre-and post-test in SPE group (p=0,40). All of the items of therapeutic communication skills were significantly improved as well as the mean value. This suggests that SPE method is effective in improving therapeutic communication skills of undergraduate nursing students. This result consistent with the previous studies about the use of standardized patient as an effective method for enhancing therapeutic communication in nursing students (Kameg et al., 2009, Kesten, 2011, Shepherd et al., 2010, Bosse et al., 2010, Webster, 2013, Lin et al., 2013, Judd, 2013, Choi, 2012, Choi, 2013). A study by Webster (2013) used the same evaluation instrument with this study. In that study, that were only 2 out of 14 items of therapeutic communication skills in the SPE group that were not significantly improved. The reason was because in these two items, the pre test value in SPE group were already high. The statistical analysis in this study showed that there was significant improvement in comfort and …show more content…

The SPE is categorized into simulation learning method in which the similarity level of the learning environment into the real clinical condition (fidelity) affects on the learning experience and its result (Jeffries, 2012, Bosse et al., 2010). The realistic of SPE can be reflected from its ability in giving opportunity for the students to interact and perform assessment with the SPs who are the real patients with DM. In addition, SPE offers learning experience from the authentic cases. For example, during interacting with the SP,
