Sports Media Media is known for taking an issue and exaggerating the truth and putting out the bias of their own political ideology. In sports media the same could be said about how the sports analyst have their bias about teams, players and coaches. This bias directly hurts the image and reputation of people who may not want the attention or made a mistake that was blown out of proportion. Also sports media tend to cover many rumors that may not always be true, but even if the rumor isn’t true at the end, it tends to affect the viewer’s perspective anyway. Sports media outlets such as ESPN and recently Fox Sports 1 hurt or enhance the images of players, coaches, owners, and teams by covering and reporting rumors that are sometimes untrue and they also broadcast sportscasters' biased opinions ultimately causing the public to change their opinions of sports figures. “Sports do not build character…. They reveal it” (John Wooden). This quote by the UCLA coaching legend, John Wooden, best describe LeBron James and particularly in the 2010 off season. There was month of speculation about this event that was going to become a nationwide headline. The decision of whether the number one basketball player in the country would stay in his home town of Cleveland or opt out to go to another team such as the Chicago Bulls or the Miami Heat. This type of programming wasn’t necessary at all because every off season, there are hundreds of transactions made throughout the league, and sports programs, such as ESPN, made the NBA look like it revolved around LeBron. After “the decision” was made, a lot of criticism followed around LeBron because he left his hometown to chase a championship and because of the show itself. Sports is real life drama that can’t be scripted, from underdog stories to the fall of dynasties none of the events that occur in sports can be scripted. Sports media cover all these dramas and puts out their opinion about the subject, which usually has a bias towards big markets. The bias of sports media may be predictable, but not every viewer is informed so their opinion about the matter can easily sway the viewer. Sports media isn’t always bad because they do capture the special moments in sports and they bring awareness to social issues to the public. Sports media can single handedly make or break a player’s, coach’s, or team’s image by either covering the good or the bad story and it will affect the opinion of the national audience.
