The film Poetic Justice, starring main character Justice, played by Janet Jackson, manages to be one representation of African American reality rather than what is depicted by white Hollywood casting directors. Hollywood thought one way of pleasing and satisfying the black audience was to feature Blacks by giving them the opportunity to partake in films. As shown in Hollywood Shuffle, white directors seek African Americans to play written roles following a certain “Hollywood formula” which only portrayed black stereotypes. Receiving the opportunity of starring within these roles manage to be a conflict for an African American actor and/or actress. This underfunded film was shot in Brooklyn and at the time was directed by a young black director who we now know as, Spike Lee. She’s Gotta Have It managed to be filmed in a time frame as short as twelve days and surprisingly became a hit. What differentiates a Hollywood film from a low budget or independent film is that an average Hollywood film price can vary for multiple different reasons and may even vary anywhere from 1 million to 20-30 million dollars, sometimes more. In comparison to e.g., Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It film, which was shot on a budget of $175,000. She may not have chosen the same education/career path as her mother, however, she did retain a steady job as a hairstylist and was involved in poetry writing. Although Justice managed to witness the murder of her boyfriend, she further used her skill as a healing method to help cope with her pain. Justice had a convention to attend in Oakland and ended up riding along with a postal worker, Lucky, played by Tupac Shakur. Despite their unpleasant previous encounters they managed to bond during this road trip, surprisingly developing compelling attractiveness towards each other. Although foul language, sex, and death were all present, in my opinion I felt as if all the above were needed in order to help achieve a serious portrayal of middle class African American individuals in Southern Los
