These statistics raise a startling flag when you think of the nature of this form of correction. Despite the movement to end this form of punishment, we can’t seem to let go of the violence our nation was built on. Many parents ignore the reports that provide negative facts on corporal punishment. They do this because there reason was they were spanked as a child and they turned out fine, their parents did it to them so they can do it to their children, there’s no other way to punish them and get their point across. These are socialized foams of reasoning for justifying the action. The mass media and government of our society still supports this idea of a parent according dominance over their children. As long as large social structures like the media and government support the pro side of corporal punishment, it will take time to change the masses opinions on it. This method, or technique perhaps, has been around for decades, even centuries. Generations have sat on grandpa’s lap and listened to the stories of picking their own switch or getting the belt after pulling off a devilish trick. So why then has it become a major controversy in the past few decades? Spanking a child is a controversial issue. On one side of the debate are people who believe spanking is a necessary component of parenting. On the contrary are people who think spanking a child is destructive. Somewhere in the middle are people who believe spanking is legitimate only when used correctly. Part of the reason for the debate is that some parents and experts define spanking differently. To some, spanking means slapping a child on the rear-end, while others believe it is a form of corporal punishment that does not cause injury. By showing how each perspective of spanking supports their claim and defining spanking, one will be able to form an opinion.
Spanking is commonly associated with parents attempting to correct behavior in a child; ultimately often out of frustration and/or anger with the child’s behavior. In the heat of the moment, most parents do not associate the long term psychosocial or behavioral effects the act of spanking can have on a child. The dangers of these effects derived from how children think and behave show us that spanking is not an effective form of discipline.
In this article, the author expresses the effects that spanking your child as a form of punishment at the age earlier ages of toddlerhood such as to the effects it has on the child when he or she becomes older. Spanking is a very common form of punishment at this age and used frequently across the United States as well as other countries. Many parents do not understand the effects that spanking has on their children now and what effect it has on their future and that there are other forms of punishment that can leave the same impact but cause less emotional and physical damage.

If parents were set to believe corporal punishment leads to the development of mental issues or physical aggression with peers solving conflicts (Taylor et al.,2016). If the world knew what corporal punishment actually does parents would seek a different approach. Most parents think the views of their children is a reflection of how they are being raised, which supports why this article argument is stronger. Another reason this article is stronger argument is because of how severe the logical fallacies are with in “Spanking and Children’s Externalizing Behavior Across the First Decade of Life:” Even so, the article did provide some strong points as well by recognizing the limitations the studies bring with parents by relying on their responses to general questions about spanking.

Spanking has several effects on the children which build many opinions among the people. Researchers have shown many positive and negative sides of physical punishment. There are several people that agree with spanking their children and there are others who are against punishing the children. Many of the parents who spank their children believe that spanking is sometimes okay because they think it will make a positive effect on their behavior. Spanking is used to correct children’s behavior, but, many people think that instead of bettering the child’s behavior it makes it worse. Spanking has been a huge issue in the past decades. Many children have been physically abused and many others have never experienced any physical harm. However, several people have been fighting so that spanking becomes against the law and so that the children have more rights and security. On the other hand, there are other parents that want spanking to be legal because they believe spanking has helped them correcting the child's behavior.

Another source of variation is the fact that spanking is often paired with other parenting behaviours such as, scolding, yelling, or perhaps raging and subsequently reasoning. A third source of variation concerns parental characteristics. Darling and Steinberg (1993) distinguished between the content of parental acts and the style in which it was administered (Holden, 2002). With all this variation researchers cannot definitively isolate the singular effects of spanking.
In my eyes spanking does not fix a child’s behavior, nor help them learn right from wrong. Which is why I disagree with parents being able to spank their children. Data has shown that 13 out of a total of 17 negative outcomes they assessed, including increased aggression and behavioral and mental health problems as well as reduced cognitive ability and self-esteem (Moyer, 2016). Children should not be delayed mentally because of a form of discipline from their parents that use the discipline as a source of control. I also disagree with the opposing view because there is a way to teach a child right and wrong and a proper way to seize control.
Spankings shows you don’t approve of whatever it was your child did. Spanking is harsh for kids but it gets their immediate attention and the bad behavior usually would stop right away, but most of all, it creates respect for parents. “94% of 3 to 4 year olds have been spanked at least once during the past year. 74% of mothers believe spanking is acceptance for kids ages 1 to 3 and 61% of parents condone spanking as a “regular form of punishment” for young children. Parents who believe they have no alternative except to spank their misbehaving children do not need finger-wagging lectures from clinicians, but they do need professional support and education, aimed at reducing their level of stress and increasing their use of alternatives to corporal punishment.

Corporal punishment is punishment in the form of physical pain, spanking causes pain in the buttocks and can lead to harmful effects for the child. According to Maggie Fox, lower cognitive ability can result from spanking; affliction of the skills that is used to solve problems hinders the learning process. Behavioral problems and aggression can also be a consequence of spanking the child. (par 10 & 11) Spanking can have abusive results as the parent hits the child frequently. Abusive results from spanking involve children covered in welts and bruises.
