Ask yourself this question: “Was I “spanked” as a child?”, if so you may be at a disadvantage in life. Corporal punishment in the form of “spanking” is used in disciplinary acts across the globe but, is it successful in teaching a child obedience? “Spanking” should not be used to discipline children.
Corporal punishment is punishment in the form of physical pain, spanking causes pain in the buttocks and can lead to harmful effects for the child. According to Maggie Fox, lower cognitive ability can result from spanking; affliction of the skills that is used to solve problems hinders the learning process. The act of spanking has no positive benefits and causes the exact opposite of what the parents want out of the action (Holeman). Parents that spank their child normally do it when the child misbehaves and the desired outcome is obedience. The people who are more likely to promote spanking are those who have been spanked in the past and others who go against spanking have never been or have seen the harmful results(Holeman). According to Time.com, countries like Singapore use intense spanking in the form of caning for certain offenses. However, other countries have passed anti-spanking laws but those laws are not enforced (Time).
