Spanking has been a form of punishment used by many parents for years. Although spanking has always been controversial, spanking shouldn’t be outlawed because it is an effective way to discipline and structure children. Parents view spanking as an effective form of punishment that gets the point across to the child that they should not do the bad things that they received that punishment for. Most children are spanked from age two until almost ten years old. However, many studies have shown that spanking has led to many emotional and physical problems.The line between spanking and child abuse is very thin, and a parent could go too far.

The key to finding a punishment that works is the child’s age and his attitude. For very young children, having a calm down spot (timeout) it is a great alternative. This is a safe spot where the child could sit down and relax before coming back to play. It doesn’t have the title “timeout” which makes kids act out more. This will help a child feel trust towards you instead of hitting them and breaking that bond. If the parent decides to be just a little bit stricter,parents could have a “time-in.” (Alternatives) “Time-in” is a form of time out but the parent stays with the child and discusses the situation. There are many more alternatives that help the child understand what they did wrong and the correct ways to handle it. When a parent spanks, the child becomes afraid of making a mistake which is a common thing for children growing up.
