Spanking of a child as a form of discipline and parenting style is a subject that has been debated for many years now. There are some people who believe that spanking is a good form of punishment and will make the child no longer perform the bad behavior that the child is displaying. There are also people who believe that spanking a child will cause negative results to the child’s behavior in the future. There are many arguments to support each side. The side that I feel is most accurate to my beliefs is that spanking puts a child at higher risk for negative behavioral actions. One argument made in favor of not spanking children for punishment is that it is a violation of children’s human rights. The children at that age are not capable of standing up for themselves and fighting back. The child is not strong enough and doesn’t have as much power behind its voice to get the parent to stop punishing him/her with physical violence. Parents don’t see the harm in using physical punishment because this is how they grew up and were taught not to display negative behaviors. This type of discipline of children is becoming less popular than it was in the past generations. Many studies show that physical punishment on a child will lead to increased aggression, mental health problems, and anti-social behavior. These parents believe that if you teach a child that every time they do something bad they will get hit that that is what they believe they should do to other people when other people are doing negative things.
