The topic that I decided to research this semester is songwriters in the music business and what is required for them to have success in the music industry. There are many different aspects that come into play when determining how successful a record becomes. I will look into the compensation of songwriters, music industry relations, the legal aspects behind the music industry, and more. Songwriters are among the most overlooked in regards to the success of an artist. The general public is not aware of the process that takes place with every song they hear. We see the finished product without really taking into consideration what propelled a particular song or project to success and notoriety.

A&R representatives and publishers spend hours on top of hours listening for quality sound and resounding potential as well. It is their job to take something or someone and provide ways for them to improve their sound and craft. Getting the attention of a publisher is not the end all be all in the music business. To get discovered and receive recognition, you need to reach a certain level of quality. The world of music is sparked with creative and quality effort that inspires an artist or songwriter. Whatever happens next with that song is where the business of the music industry comes into play. On many occasions, the first contact that a songwriter has with this business side of music is through an encounter with a music publisher. This relationship can be one of the most important ones a songwriter and artist will ever enter into as the role of the music publisher is to make as much use of the song as possible to negotiate deals with all of those who want to utilize the song in their own project. One of the roles the publisher has is to secure released recordings, CDs, and tapes of the songs it controls. The publisher also should have a legitimate staff of managers who not only know what artists are recording and what material is needed for a particular session, but who also have a good working relationship with record company A&R executives, producers, recording artists, and managers.
