Beginning with civil rights to the current dispute of birthrights, the fight for women’s rights has not only increased but also divulged into fighting new areas of inequality. Sociologist like Talcott Parsons and Betty Friedan bring up interesting theories surrounding the gendered role of women within American families. They both provide contrasting arguments about the foundations and maintenance of the suppression of women. Talcott Parsons in his work “Sexuality within the American Kingship” would explain the inequality existing between men and women within the American households. He would assert that the role of women within these families would be secondary to the husband due to the fact that the social order of society maintained that a family was defined by the occupation and status of the father. Although unfair he felt that the subordinate position of women served a social function.
