Through the reading of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the question of how social “norms” affect our daily lives is raised. Societal rules, such as eating properly, and being able to act accordingly in public, in my opinion, affect how someone is viewed by others, and how other people will interact with that person. Someone's ability to learn, and conform to societal rules has a direct impact on how successful they will be in society. I have had the wonderful experience of eating a meal, in a business setting, surrounded by many important people in the agriculture industry, and having a peer have no idea how to eat properly. This raised many eyebrows of the people surrounding, and made myself feel hotly embarrassed for, and by them. This instance has given me insight into the impact that societal rules play in the business world. The importance of this rule would be exemplified by the fact that schools have rules on what we can and can not wear. I fully agree with schools enforcing such rules, as i have seen people in schools, who have made other students, and teacher uncomfortable by their choice of dressing. I understand that people use attire as a means of expressing who they are. But it is also important to recognize others opinions and make sure that you don't make them feel uncomfortable. This rule holds fast in society as general, as well in the professional world.
