2.3.1 Social media characteristic Social media is an online media which is used to transmit or share information with each other. The five characteristics had been underlining the operations of all of the social media by Cross (2014) and Chan, Sylvia M., Moonhee Cho (2013), which are participate, openness, conversation, community, and connectedness. Characteristic Definition Participate Participation in social media is action oriented interactivity, which can be defined as the receivers and sender are actively involved in their interaction as opposed to giving discoursing, passively observing, or lurking. Social media encourages contribution and receive feedback from everyone who is interested in a topic. Openness Most of the social media services are open for the user to give feedback and participation. The characteristic of openness is enhanced by the philosophy of social media networking and the accessibility of easy to use mechanisms for sharing information, creating contents. Media users can move from one site to others in cyberspace by social media and social media offer connectedness to users which by providing Web links to other sites, information, resources, and people. From a mediated communication context, connectedness allows people to tie to the outside world and to easily gain their personal experiences. According to Lee, Draper, & Lee (2001), connectedness is positively related to the closeness and identification with others when connectedness is perceived. Hence, people with low connectedness feel as outsiders from the group and they are not adequate for social situations.
