In the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, the protagonist Okonkwo struggles between tribal tradition, his internal conflicts with his own beliefs, and the arrival of European missionaries to Africa. Okonkwo’s own perspective is limited to a heavily masculine praising mindset, driving him to be rash and violent at times, but his own tribe has a variety of traditions and personalities. Immediately, Okonkwo sees these missionaries as a threat to his place in society, their beliefs are frowned upon by most of the tribes and people of power. Missionaries see African tribes as animalistic and primitive. Okonkwo’s perspective was valid considering all the damage missionaries would eventually cause in the long run. Though, his actions are good intentioned, he still contributed to the overall negative impact of European interference with Africa. The way missionaries saw themselves were along the lines of messengers of God who come to save the souls of the savage. Mr.Brown respected the people there, he built a hospital and school for them as well. At the same time, he still caused a social change in a way, he had a more white saviour complex. He also had to encourage his flock to accept the indigenous people in the way that he did, displaying how concepts of social Darwinism are common amongst Europeans. The struggles between powers and tradition is brought about once Europeans intrude, once again Okonkwo's view could definitely be justified on the basis that European occupation did do a lot of damage to the culture and image of the indigenous people of Africa. Perhaps the most detrimental effect was social Darwinism which in favor led to more racism engraved within these societies and societies to come. The rejection of indigenous culture by the people who once had it could’ve also led to a greater sense of self hate.
