Human beings are defined as ''social animals'' because in every aspects of life they live together, they form a variety of groups and improve relationships with each other. Interaction with others is a natural result of living in society. In the process of interaction, society and its rules has a social impact on each individual. If people face with any kind of social impact such as group pressure, great part of them show conformity by changing their behaviors, ideas, decisions in expected way. A person conforms if he or she chooses a course of action that a majority favors or that is socially acceptable. Some kind of conformity is natural and socially healthy but obeying all the norms, ideas, and decisions without thinking or accepting is harmful for the society and its democratic norms....
Many people have trouble being apart of a society. These troubles come from trying to fit in, which is also known as conforming. Another trouble is trying to express one’s own style with one’s own opinion. This is a trouble due to the fact that many people have the fear of being frowned upon when being the black sheep of the group if one’s opinion does not correspond with other opinions. This is where one’s own sense of who they are, individuality, and trying to fit in, conformity, can get confused. Pursuing a personal desire and choosing to conform to societal expectations is a challenging decision to make. A person must decide if their personal desire is worth risking the shame and judgment of others or is conforming the route to take because it is easier. When pursuing a personal desire one must ask itself if it is worth the hardship to accomplish one's desire or if it is best left alone and repressed, in hopes of finding comfort in conformity. John Laroche from The Orchid Thief expresses his personal desire without a care for conformity or societal expectations. For instance, teenagers may encounter pressure from their peers to partake in specific exercises that may not be moral, since they feel the need to fit in. Conformity refers to an individual’s behavior that is performed because of group pressure, even though that pressure might not involve a direct request. Many people want to think that they are conformist enough so that they are not looked upon as strange to others and nonconformist enough to demonstrate that they are capable of thinking by themselves. For many years, psychologists have been interested in human conformity. Usually when people are in groups, they behave according to how those in the group behave. That indicates that conformity can affect a person’s behavior and make a person do things that may be against their ethics, attitudes, and morals. The study of conformity was first studied in the 1950s by Solomon Asch. His experiments were very important to the study of conformity. Asch wanted to find out how conformity could influence behavior. He did not want to focus on the general concepts like ethics, morals, attitudes, and belief systems. Instead, he focused on a more obvious concept which was perceptional conformity. Since he performed the experiment on a simple task, he was able to study conformity in a controlled environment. Asch wanted to apply group pressure to the experiment so he could manipulate a person’s behavior. There are many things that influence our behavior from internal influences to social norms. Social norms are implicit or explicit rules that govern how we behave in society (Maluso, class notes). Social norms influence our behavior more than any of us realize but we all notice when a norm has been broken. Breaking a social norm is not an easy task and often leads us feeling uncomfortable whether we broke the norm ourselves or witnessed someone else breaking it. Sometimes however, you just have to break a norm to see what happens.
Conformity and Its Meaning This assignment focuses upon conformity and what it means to us. Conformity is defined by Zimbardo (1992) as "A tendency for people to adopt behaviour, values and attitudes of other members of a reference group". Why people conform is a topic of much debate. People don't always conform for the same reason's, in 1958 Kelman identified three main forms of conformity, each of which could produce conforming behaviour but in different ways.
According to Leon Mann, conformity means ‘yielding to group pressures’. Everyone is a member of one group or another and everyone expects members of these groups to behave in certain ways. If you are a member of an identifiable group you are expected to behave appropriately to it. If you don’t confirm and behave appropriately you are likely to be rejected by the group. Like stereotypes, conforming and expecting others to conform maintains cognitive balance.
In Brave New World, Huxley emphasizes that conformity compromises humanity through the elimination of knowledge and history to eradicate curiosity. Knowledge and history are irrelevant concepts within this society, as it is believed that they lead to curiosity which creates the possibility of change, an exiled idea in this world. Huxley explores the concept that by conforming to society’s rules and regulations it compromises humanity’s individual perspectives and rights to knowledge and history. In the novel, the idea that people are conditioned to believe and understand what they have been taught and not to question the possibilities due to the lack of knowledge is explored. There are three types of social influence compliance, obedience, and conformity. This essay will focus on conformity and obedience. These issues will be examined by considering classic studies and contemporary implications.
Every day of my life the sociology of “norms” is at work in my daily life. It works on a subconscious level, keeping me from acting “strange”. These norms are my guiding light to acting “normal” and fitting in with the societies that I am a part of, they tell me how to conduct myself and what my expectations of other’s behaviors should be.
According to Levitan and Verhulst, (2015), Conformity can be defined as a movement on the part of the discrepant person towards the group norm as a function of explicit or implicit social pressure from group members. (Levitan & Verhulst, 2015). This definition implies that conformity stems from the desire to be uniform, in order to gain popularity and therefore become closer to members of a certain group.
In every society, there is conformity and nonconformity, although we may not notice it. Conformity is when someone is doing the same thing as others because they do not want to be the only one doing differently. Example, if there was a whole class raising their hands would you want to be the only one with your hand down, no so you would raise it with the rest of the class to not look like you don't know anything. This is called social pressures it when a large group is doing something and you're the only one not then you want to be doing whatever that large group is doing.

The desire to be accepted and belong to a group is every human’s need. However, how does this need affect an individual? There are many researches that include groups can change their members’ thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
Conformity is a social influence changing one’s behavior in order to fit into society by being liked, correct, or for a social role. Most students have never come across the influence of drugs and alcohol until their college years. In order to have fun and be liked by others a person must drink excessively at a party. Otherwise being sober would seem dull and boring to their social peers. In psychology this can be seen as automatic mimicry where seeing others behave reflects the other individual acting out in the same way. Mimicry builds social relationships into pleasant situations. Specifically, in adolescence these social relationships hold a strong importance.
Conformity is the compliance with the norms of a culture and society, occurring when individuals wish to align holistically with surrounding groups. Throughout my Personal Interest Project, I shall investigate the cultural agents contributing to this trend. I hypothesise that an individual’s interaction with society influences their response to social pressures. Thus, culture, gender, perception and time affect conformity.
