Did you know that social anxiety is the third largest mental health problem in the world today? Do you feel significant emotional distress being introduced to other people, teased or criticized, the center of attention, watched while doing something, etc.? If you are then you’re showing some symptoms of social anxiety. What I social anxiety? Are anxiety and social anxiety the same?
To explain, Doctor Thomas A. Richards says “Social anxiety is the fear of interaction with other people that brings on self-consciousness, feelings of being negatively judged and evaluated, and, as a result, leads to avoidance.” This could lead to leading to feelings of inadequacy, inferiority, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression. Anxiety is different it is not the same as social anxiety. Everyone has felt anxious or embarrassed at one time or another. For example Australian electro-pop sensation Sia Furler. Everyone knows her as a very talented song writer and musician. Her song chandelier is a very popular song that came out this year. Though not everyone may know that she does have social anxiety. Sia has even said she does “I have social anxiety. It's easier up on stage because there's security in being there. When I'm off stage I'm trying not to be a manic freak. I'm quite shy.” Even I have social anxiety. I may not be a super famous musician who has a hit single but I am human just like everyone. I’ve had bad anxiety since seventh grade and I didn’t really think much of it until it got worse as I became older. The simplest things like ordering something at a restaurant became a big challenge for me. And I’m not the only one because it is estimated that about 7% of the population suffers from some form of social anxiety at the present time. The lifetime prevalence rate for developing social anxiety disorder is 13-14%.
