Has it ever crossed your mind to think about why some people are quiet when they are around groups of people? The first thought that probably came to mind was that they are shy. That person could be shy or they could be struggling with social anxiety. Are they the same thing? The reasoning behind why social anxiety and shyness are not the same thing is the differences between emotions, feelings and the traits.

The person will most likely have a fear of speaking. It causes them to be afraid of people judging them, worried about embarrassment, humiliation, or concern about offending someone. They may even be worried they will not give a good first impression. Some people who have social anxiety, try to hide it from others in fear they will be criticized for having it. People with social anxiety tend to be more stressed and worrying about the anxiety, which can make it worse. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only about one-third of those suffering receive treatment. Anxiety disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. Social anxiety can cause depression and it can make people feel left out like they do not belong, avoiding social situations such as going out with friends or family, and not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel as if the person will be stuck with anxiety forever. In fact, children with social anxiety disorder are more likely than their peers without SAD to develop depression by age fifteen and substance abuse by age sixteen or seventeen. SAD is a mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time every year. The difference between social anxiety disorder and shyness is that feelings and physical symptoms of nervousness will lower as “shy” people become more familiar with the situation; while if you have social anxiety, then they won’t, and the symptoms may even worsen. Social anxiety is not a personality trait like shyness is. Being shy is not a bad thing even though it stops the person from speaking up or being social. Social anxiety is something one cannot help unless they have medicine, which is called antidepressants. It helps the person become more open with people, more happy, and more confident with talking or their appearance.
